    I worked at Genentech

    Pros

There was a good academic research feel as well as freedom to do creative research and innovate. There was also a good work life balance and strong benefits. They also had great parties.

    Cons

The organization was too big and very complicated. There were too many people not passionate about their jobs. There was little change of career progression.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They need to enable career progression for more junior employees and simplify the organizational structure.

I worked at Genentech as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

You don't have to do 8-5. You can work whatever hours you want, as long as you put in your 40. Other plus is there is no dress codes. Jeans, sweats, whatever, is cool.

    Cons

My boss was a complete idiot. She was clueless and no business being a manager. She was in over her head. But she played the Genentech politics game well, so she continued to advance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire managers who have a clue.

    Great Company with Excellent Benefits

I worked at Genentech full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Genentech has excellent benefits to attract the best employees, a highly educated workforce, a lot of MD and PhD graduates create an intellectually stimulating environment and there is a lot of opportunity to travel internationally. The
campus is beautiful and there are many free bus services to enable employees to get to work. The restaurants in SSF campus also supply a diverse selection of food although it is not free it is certainly very delicious. A lot of online learning tools and onsite classes available to improve skills. Its a great place to work if you are a new graduate fresh out of college as you can build a large network and get some excellent training. Everyone is friendly and nice and there is a lot of support for international colleagues from Roche who move to California for work.

    Cons

The leadership team from legacy Genentech has mostly gone. Reducing cost of clinical trials is a priority within Product Development. Research and Early Development is where most of the innovation happens and Commercial is where most of the money is spent. Building relationships in a global organization is considered more important than knowledge by some managers. Communicating complex issues within a global organization can be a challenge at times as many employees (including managers) have English as a second language. Your relationship with your manager will directly influence your success and future career opportunities. The recruitment process can be slow at times. HR do not always have a good understanding of the job requirements or business of the departments they support. A lot of employees stay for the benefits but may be more productive or engaged if they were to seek new opportunities elsewhere. Some of the culture of innovation has been lost since Roche took over but Genentech is still a top employer in the Bay Area. A lot of Roche employees have taken the top management positions in SSF.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage senior leadership to understand the business of each department and listen to their employees instead of making decisions that reduce costs but make it harder for employees to get the work done. Hire employees who know how to communicate and understand the business in addition to having the MD, PhD educational requirements.

I worked at Genentech full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

A fun culture, people worked well together and enjoyed each other's company in my department. The informal nature of the working environment allowed it to be less stressful. I felt everything was very well organized and there was a purpose behind everything. A lot of very smart people work here.

    Cons

I worked as a contractor, almost half of the company are hired as contractors. Some become permanent, most don't. Contractors do not receive the same benefits or treatment as regular employees, for example contractors are not allowed to go to certain events, which is awkward when a large portion of a department are contractors and they aren't allowed to attend something the rest of the department is, which always happens. The other thing is sometimes contractors will suddenly have their contract cancelled early for no seeming reason or explanation, just poof, and they're gone. They are also not always treated as nicely because they are so disposable so common courtesy and respect will sometimes be absent in communication. Not always but it happens.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

With the number of contractors that work for you, it would be smart to take steps toward making them be more of a part of the company, rather than "just a contractor". You never know if someone working on contract with you could someday be a very important part of the organization.

I have been working at Genentech full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Company that has the right set of values and goals, good aspirational focus: focused on patient and unmet medical needs. Decent career growth if you fit the culture, very good childcare facilities on campus and good overall employee appreciation events.

    Cons

Not enough racial diversity at the most senior levels (senior director and above) and senior management can be myopic in putting people into a box, they brand you (i.e. what you are known for) based on their direct experience as opposed to what you can bring to the table (developing you and your potential).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider adding more non-Caucasian women to your senior ranks in Commercial and MCCO. Still predominantly a Caucasian-based leadership team in these functions.

I worked at Genentech as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

The people are top-notch and they have great benefits

    Cons

Sometimes work-life balance can be hectic, but that can be said for most all companies. Contractors are sometimes treated like second class citizens even thought they can contribute just as much as the employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to show that you value your employees and striving to provide good work-life balance. Happy employees are usually hard working and loyal employees.

I have been working at Genentech full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Well respected in the industry. Scientists at this company can often get director level positions at other compaies. Employees get good salaries, bonuses and benefits. Good cafes and free gym. GenenBuses reach almost every corner of the bay area.

    Cons

High stress and heavy work load. Working with its parent company Roche is not always straight forward.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too much is money is spent on off-sites and traveling, but too little on promotions. Give employees better titles.
