I have been working at General Atomics Aeronautical Systems full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good money, ok benefits, cool product

    Cons

Lame HR, so many rules and stupid processes, some managers are slave drivers (you should be happy to have a job). Everything is a priority so nothing is. Ever changing goals and long term stratiges

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire someone that know how to run a billion dollar company. Realize that multiple priorities with top status make everything take longer. EMPOWER YOUR EMPLOYEES

I worked at General Atomics Aeronautical Systems full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good benefits: 9/80, the pension, CAL, Christmas shut-down.

    Cons

The company makes a solid product but it promotes and retains incompetent people. The HR department is no different. The department is quite large and has turned over almost 100% in the past couple years. There are a lot nasty people where favoritism is rampant.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Mr. Blue: Please do yourself a favor and clean house at the top - including the "leadership" in HR. It's a very unhealthy environment.

I have been working at General Atomics Aeronautical Systems full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Opportunity to work on some fascinating leading-edge technology; excellent as a first job and stepping stone to a better-paying job elsewhere for new graduates; good benefits, but you will pay for many of them; 401K and pension plan; fair starting salary but nothing stellar; chance for annual bonus; nice annual event for employees and their families; public recognition for length of service; 9-hour workday with alternate Fridays off; some very technically talented people to work with; as a privately-owned company, GA can take the long view without shareholder interference; San Diego

    Cons

Excessively bureaucratic; highly compartmentalized with little cross-team interaction; little opportunity for advancement or growth; plan to stay in the same job, doing the same thing, at the same job classification and inflation-pegged raises, for years and years; manager can block intra-company transfer even if it would be for a better job; little autonomy, multiple levels of approval are needed to do anything new, different, or even to get the tools needed for your job; plan to get thrown under the bus at least once during your time at GA so your manager can move up; increased responsibility rarely results in increased pay; training focuses mostly on learning internal administrative policies and procedures; little instruction on the tools needed to comply with internal policies and procedures; virtually no technical training or direction, you're on your own to maintain your skill set; administrative demands, even trivial, always seem to take precedence over customer work and deliverables; no recognition for your work accomplishments; just won a multi-million dollar contract after years of work?, that's nice, now get back to work; no way to report any extra hours you work (bad for project planning and personal credit); no comp time for evenings or weekends worked; no special amenities, like free coffee or meals if they tell you to work late or on weekends; annual performance reviews focus on the past, rarely the future; no career path planning from management; get it out now then firefight the problems later

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let employees perform an annual evaluation of management; truly listen to employee suggestions and make an honest evaluation; new-employee induction process should be improved to cover more than just policies and administrative procedures; when changes are made, explain why, not just "do it"; push management to move as fast as they push the technical folks; take some management classes

I worked at General Atomics Aeronautical Systems full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Benefits, pension, 9/80 schedule, bonus. Like that they do value company morale and do a lot for the employees like free flu shots, summer event (Sea World, Zoo, etc).

    Cons

In my particular area the favoritism was too obvious. Understand there is company politics, but this was too much. Every company can improve in communication.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Really need to evaluate some members of upper management. Some people really should not be in leadership roles.

I have been working at General Atomics Aeronautical Systems full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

9/80 Work Schedule and every other Friday Off.

    Cons

Low Pay. Absolutely no opportunity for advancement or growth. They have a company policy that you cannot move up into another position if it is more than 7% of your current pay. There are many internal talented employees that are not considered for positions due to this rule. It's absurd. They would rather hire from the outside and pay someone more than give a more than qualified internal employee the promotion and raise.
Poor Management. Too many Chiefs and too little Indians.
If you are retired Military, you are given a job even though you have no experience.
No matter how hard you work, you will receive the said raise as someone who is a total slacker.
No recognition for your work accomplishments
Awful Time Card System. No flexibility with time. No overtime allowed and if you do work overtime, it will be removed from your timecard.
There is no "team" mentality. Most departments would rather fight against each other than work together.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of your 7% rule and allow for internal growth for loyal and talented employees. Allow employees a clear career path and offer incentive and compensation for their hard work.
Get rid of useless overhead. There are so many people who slack off.
Just because someone was in the Military, does not make them qualified for a position.

I have been working at General Atomics Aeronautical Systems full-time for more than a year

    Pros

It's a solid company that seems to be growing, the benefits are good and also have a pension, a 9/80 schedule is the best thing about the company because it gives you more of a chance for a vacation without taking too much vacation time.

    Cons

Don't promote from within, a lot of favoritism involved here, if you are not a favorite well than you are basically out. Management doesn't believe in being "overwhelmed" its just something you have to deal with because people should not be overwhelmed. If you ever mention that you are overwhelmed than they just think its because you cannot prioritize properly. Management is not good at offering chances for promotion or any mentor ship what so ever.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

monitor lower management more closely, offer a mentor program, have fun company events between different departments
