    Not much to do

    Software Engineer (Former Employee)
    Poway, CA

ProsThe work to dollars ratio is high. Engineers make competitive salary, some are worked to the bone; most are bored.

ConsBoredom, and a stovepiped organization that doesn't allow you to move around easily.

Advice to Senior ManagementYour smartest employees will be looking for skills to carry them through for another 10-15 years. If they aren't learning them at work, they will move on.

    Horribly unorganized and chaotic

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Poway, CA

ProsChallenging and meaningful work, industry leading products. A lot of good people to work with.

ConsManagement is poor and unreceptive. Director is controlling and a hindrance. Employees overworked.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet organized, quit talking (barking) over everyone, provide an environment that will allow for your employees to succeed. Provide a clear idea of project priorities and stop changing them weekly / daily.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

    It's a paycheck

    Program Manager III (Current Employee)
    Poway, CA

ProsBig government budgets so good stability. 9/80 work week.

ConsAlmost all management are retired military officers. They still wear their rank at General Atomics. Some even prefer to be called by the Active duty pay grade they held. They still wear their leather flight jackets in and call each other by their call signs. If you are a retiring aviator, join the club and you will fit right in. If not, shut up and color'

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep on counting your money.

Great Technology but Micromanagement sometimes gets in the way

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Poway, CA

ProsAble to work with great technology. Up to date hardware in data centers. Provides training on items that you support.

ConsFrequently pulled off projects to work on other projects. Put on so many projects it is difficult to complete them in a timely fashion.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive employees the project goal and let them do what they were hired to do to complete the project. Prioritize projects and have employees focus and complete them without ping-ponging between many projects.

Horrible management. All ex military managers. Boot camp.......begin!

    Tech Writer (Former Employee)
    Poway, CA

ProsGood benefits. Good cafeteria. Good parking. Not many other pros to this place. Can't really say too much good about these folks.

ConsPoor hiring practices. People get hired because they are old military buddies, not because of qualifications. Lots of yelling and screaming. Had a manager tell us he could make my group come in and scrub toilets with tooth brushes. A bunch of grouchy old men.

Advice to Senior ManagementFire yourself and start over.

    Taking advantage of down economy

    Technician III (Current Employee)
    Poway, CA

ProsFlexible working conditions. Onsite health facility. Easy use of granted time off for personal reasons. Located away from the hustle and bustle of downtown San Diego. Every other Friday is off with the 9hr work days.

ConsCompletely taking advantage of down economy and not willing to pay what employees are worth. Recruitment process was worst and most unprofessional I've experienced. Never available, never return phone calls or emails, and very lazy approach with questions.

Advice to Senior ManagementLittle to no communication between management and employees. Overall lack of accountability on employees. General sense of a lack of urgency in process improvement. "That's the way we've always done it" approach. Great product with great future success but will be eventually crippled by the lack of better mid-level management, training, and mentorship programs.

General Atomics Aeronautical is a sweat shop

    Supply Chain (Current Employee)
    Poway, CA

ProsThe company is growing so there is job security.

ConsWhere to begin. The place is run like a broken military unit. They do not understand or respect the outside lives of their employees, get the job done at all costs. Many people here work in excess of 60 hours a week and some more than that.
Very poor communication between departments and leadership. Within this organization you feel as though you are a robot.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to promote team work and a sense of family within the ranks. The culture is bland and not engergizing. Work, work, work is not always the best way to extract the best from your people.
Take some management classes and learn to inspire people.
