    Pros

    Friendly culture, religious, relaxed, family-friendly

    Cons

Some stick in the muds, not a lot of room for advancement. Methodist Church is changing so GBOD will change as well

I worked at General Board of Discipleship full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Worked with some really great people

    Cons

The place was rife with office politics. Leadership was more interested in maintaining their status than being effective leaders.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at General Board of Discipleship full-time

    Pros

This is a wonderful, spiritually grounded, inspiring group of people. There can be opportunities to move up, and there are lots of types of programs etc that one can move into. The Board really takes care of its people first (when not going through lay-offs) and will look internally before hiring externally. I really value all of the people I worked with. Many had been there for decades which is a reflection of the values and orientation of the organization.

    Cons

Decisions are made from above without the input of employees and at least while I was there, there was a veil of silence around the future and any changes. I was there at the height of a crisis and some transitions though, so take that with a grain of salt.

Also there is a limited scope as far as the ability to see beyond the agency. There is some interest in becoming more relevant and making changes/taking risks in that direction, but steps are limited and often run by people who are not of the community being addressed or otherwise out of touch with the issue in the world..

I have been working at General Board of Discipleship full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Benefits. Only the decent benefits.

    Cons

Clergy staff mistake divinity degree for being divine

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you're a consultant or decorator, this is your next mark. They pay dearly for every management or open office design trend they hear. They lay off staff to pay for moving deck chairs on this Titanic.

If you're clergy tired of the rigors of congregational work & want to be paid to chase fancies with little oversight while telling professional staff how to do their job, this is your next appointment.

    Pros

    Decent and fair benefit package

    Cons

Low morale, high turnover, routine layoffs, inexperienced leadership, poor communication, overfocus on social issues, stressful and hostile work environment.

They keep saying "it will get better," but it hasn't.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on Jesus Christ. Trust your people. Hire a leader who lives out your mission and understands business.

I have been working at General Board of Discipleship full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Finding God in your work is part of the mission, vision, and planning every year and throughout each day are my favorite pros. I also like the many ways I have been able to work with other departments and step outside of my office to do things like volunteer in mission work, participate on event planning teams, lead music in chapel services each week..... It's basically like working for a nice church, but in a more cooperate setting.

    Cons

Sometimes a structured "work" atmosphere with set start and end times can be liberating. While this exists, for the most part it feels like there is a kind of tunnel vision with focuses on relationships, spirituality, and community. Good stuff, but can be distracting when trying to get things done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No advice, have only been around a year. Sure I have much to learn.

I worked at General Board of Discipleship

    Pros

Great place to work if you're done advancing your career and just need to coast.

    Cons

Upper management has no leadership skills; they say one thing and do exactly the opposite. Whatever management theory is in vogue at the moment is adopted, only to be dropped months later. Full of egomaniacs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Realize that just because youve made it up high in church hierarchy doesn't mean you have the skills to run an organization. Get some humility and some real leader training - not the pop psychology garbage you spew out every day

I have been working at General Board of Discipleship

    Pros

Flexible in work life balance. Great place if you're ready to settle and raise a family.

    Cons

Limited professional growth due over exaggerated politics within the United Methodist Church.

I worked at General Board of Discipleship

    Pros

Good salary, benefits. Management open to new things.

    Cons

Favoritism is rampant. Thus, many managers are not qualified to lead. People with exceptional talent or skills don't stay around long. It's too frustrating.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire for talent and ability. Not for whether you are friends with the person. Don't ignore the needs of employees to grow professionally. They really are important to the success of the organization.
