    I have been working at General Board of Global Ministries full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    its a very relaxed culture and the people are very nice. You get 45 minutes for lunch and 15 minutes for break. benefits package is great.

    Cons

    Its very outdated. A lot of people here are great in ministry but don't know how to run an office. There are many incompetent workers, People who are good at their job are penalized by being given more work and people who are lazy and slow don't get asked to do anything.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    don't just hire people from ministry. Get people outside of the church world to bring productivity to a max.

    Classist, hierarchical, and nepotistic: If you can negotiate special privileges this is the place for you.

    Pros

    Flexible work hours, great benefits, good work/life balance, a lot of creative control.

    Cons

    Working there is like going back into time, into a bygone Mad Men era where secretaries (mostly people of color) sit outside (mostly white) executives' offices and are treated with less respect and given less opportunity than those already at the top. If you are an executive with kids, you can negotiate to be "deployed," live in another state, opt out of NY state/city taxes, and stay for free in New York City when you visit. If you're not, HR legalese will justify why you can't.

    Corporate culture is terrible and ageist. Work is siloed, not perceived as the organization's work, and any suggestions for improvement if it touches another's work is seen as a threat. There is low transparency. Communication is minimal, from the top down.

    There is no real upholding of standards and HR is just a pawn for upper management. GBGM clamors for young people to join the church but will not listen to or include their young (below 35) employees in decision making. They have the most talent and drive and it's being wasted. No wonder they've been leaving in droves.

    No upward mobility at all, unless you're already at the top. Support staff with 10-20 years experience are overlooked for new temps or interns, and there's hardly any graduation from support to executive because it's self-fulfilled: there is no "training up," so people don't have the skills, so they're not promoted. People are presumed to "belong" at the level they start in.

    There is no formal review process. Any attempt at a review process goes only one direction: from the top down. And borderline illegal questions about your "faith life" may be part of it.

    Nepotism everywhere. A good amount of people have a spouse/brother/sister that works together at GBGM. You even had a senior executive renting a room in her apartment to her own direct report! Church insiders are hired over those with experience because clergy are valued more.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get out of your bubble. Just because you have an MDiv or are ordained does not mean you have the business acumen to run a nonprofit organization. You also don't have all the answers.

    Don't squander the best parts about GBGM (UMCOR) for the sake of the GBGM brand. Why are they competing against each other? UMCOR is the most visible brand, let it live on its own.

    Let HR be innovative. Make them do their jobs in hiring the right and most qualified people. Implement 360 reviews, and take them seriously. Cultivate young people to practice what you preach.

    Seriously consider what trainings or prerequisites you need to make sure support staff are able to move up in the organization.

    And finally, standardize EQUITABLE benefits and expectations for ALL staff and actually UPHOLD them! No more "special circumstances"! Either it's for everyone, or no one!
