I worked at General Cable (More than a year)

    Pros

Team members were great people to work with.

    Cons

No work-life balance. Operates as a US organization in an international environment.

    Pros

Global presence allows to follow a long career path inside the same company. There is some good access to technology and information on new developments.

    Cons

In spite of having a multinational structure, the business focus heavily gravitates to a safe busines environment in North America, and there is not a strong knowledge on how to deal with emerging markets.

I worked at General Cable full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Your coworkers are generally wonderful people.

    Cons

Where to start.....salary is meager compared to the amount of work that is given/expected. People walk around displaying brain drain from the work overload. Leadership will lie to your face as they tell you they appreciate you- they don't. They would rather hire 20 year old experts to tell them how they are failing as a company instead of listening to their sales force that has been there for 10-15 years or more. Inside sales is repeatedly looked down upon and expressed that they are the bottom of the hierarchy per upper management - although they carry out all of the grunt work to keep the company afloat. Unless you are a favorite by upper management, be prepared to stay in your current position forever.

    Advice to Management

Fight for your employees and get more people. Stand up to people that are archaic and have outworn their welcome on so many levels. Get rid of them - you'll be doing everyone a favor.

I have been working at General Cable full-time

    Pros

This is a great salary for someone coming out of college who has little to no work experience. It is a nice opportunity to expand and grow in the business if you know the right people and willing to network.

    Cons

Management is shaky and could be better (executive leadership). Hopefully with the additional of the new CEO, the company can work on getting back on the good foot and offer their employees more.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees...their making continuous improvements which was very needed so I can't really say anymore than that.

    Pros

Fortune 500 Label, Cafeteria, Gym, global footprint, interesting broad product line, nice coworkers

    Cons

Lack of diversity especially at the top, terrible pay and benefits, no out of the box thinking, HR doesn't practice what it preaches and your success and career is dependent upon the relationships you have with leadership. The culture is not welcoming of new people. There are issues with communication in several areas of the company.

I have been working at General Cable full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Decent pay if you don't have a college degree, decent real world job training, and easy to get hired on because of the extremely high turnover rate.

    Cons

Terrible work environment, lack of care about safety, management is greedy and cares only about themselves, extremely high turnover rate because management can't treat employees properly, and you have to be a management favorite to progress.

    Advice to Management

Learn to appreciate the talent you have and work to get your people raises. You have people busting their tails day in and day out, giving all their time to your company due to the high demand for overtime, and you treat them like trash, don't like to give them benefits, and fight to avoid giving them a raise.

I have been working at General Cable full-time

    Pros

Salary but at some point you have to make a better decision.

    Cons

Unethical work practices. Union and staff relationship is caustic whic creates havoc.

    Advice to Management

At some point ... Let's get real. This company is unable to retain talent (ask how many people have resigned the last 12-months) because team work concepts do not exist.

I have been working at General Cable full-time

    Pros

The company provides training courses across the board to help further develop skills and encourages employees to take advantage of these benefits whenever possible.

    Cons

Unfortunately there is high turnover and employees are taking advantage of training then leaving the.company to work somewhere more desirable.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to do better at demonstrating they care about the talent they are investing in and find ways to retain them long-term. Not sure this is as simple as it seems because there is more going on internally that needs to be "fixed" and management is skilled at turning the other way overlooking issues altogether.
