I worked at General Dynamics C4 Systems full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

If you had asked me two years ago about life at GD i would have said it was a great employer. The pay was fairly good and it had an excellent work life balance. But alas after the latest rounds of redundancies there are no foreseeable pros other than plenty of space in the car park. After 5 years service it was a sad decision to leave but the instability of job security and new work coming through was just not worth the stress

    Cons

GDUK is a cronyoricy - all the good jobs go to the select few whose face fits with management. The poor vision of upper management to put all their eggs in the one big basket has backfired to the extent that they have had to pare back the workforce to the point where it will find it difficult to bid on new work and in the unlikely event they win the job there is no infrastructure left to deliver it.
the big man at the top delivered a comms session a few years ago where he talked about the gentle decline of the avionics side of the business. i think recent events at GD UK have show that the decline is more a chronic nose dive

Apologize to your workforce for wrecking a once great place to work

    Pros

large company and if you have no talent then you can join it and get to retirement

    Cons

The package is has mandatory salary scarifies that you will have not agreed to when you start and there attitude is you should have not taken it. the company creams the pension rather then propping it up. they have dubious dealing including paying back handlers to customer friends to help wining contracts but cant even get it right to work. Some of the staff are really good but most are bums on seats and talent-less but sustain a position my cut throat means. which tends to mean if you have talent you will not last long unless you hide it. They do not win by latent but by crossing palms

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

build something that works rather then been so afraid of failure and risk.

I have been working at General Dynamics C4 Systems

    Pros

If you don’t have much talent or even knowledge of you specialist area this is a place you can be part of a head count. It pays well but benefits are salary scarified so it might turn out that it does not pay as well as you agreed to also not that relocation has habit of being reduced back after 6months. You will not be work too hard, unless you are actually useful. You can go to coffee when ever you want, in-fact it is encourage. You can get a long easily by just being nice and that will be enough to keep your job as you will not be a threat to other that wish to move on up.

Remember there are some excellent staff there too, but they are out numbered

    Cons

Do not rely on honesty or integrity, senor management scarified that years ago to get where they are. All that maters is the EBIT figure to retain there position. Other lower down the chain are frightened to stick the head out even when they see wrong been done. Some of your pears will be virtually unemployable anywhere else particularly in administration, HR, quality. If you want to do interesting work and work hard then you will be the one working weekend and into the night as its not there culture to break a sweat. However when it come to crunch time they will kick and scream like 2 children.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Tighten up the ship break down the fear culture by sacking those that say wait a minute or disagree with you, lean what you business is. Reword handwork rather then those that suck up best
