Great Company working with the Federal Government incapable of doing business in the real world.

    Regional Sales Manager (Former Employee)

ProsA lot of assets at your disposal, it was great to see the support for the first quarter with the company. It was some seriously strong Kool-Aid for that time.

ConsEverything was reviewed like a federal project and no one knew how to make a decision. It was being run by a group of talented Fed Government guys that had no idea how to conduct business outside of those channels.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide direction, support and let the talented professionals you hired succeed. The current CEO is doing a job that typically was handled by a 70 year old that was ready to retire. Cutting the workforce, getting out of adjacent growth markets and "back to basics approach" is not how you tun around a company who is completely dependent on the Federal Government and large programs for its existence. Government is changing and GD is not.

Work for a company that hates their employees

    Systems Engineer (Current Employee)
    Scottsdale, AZ

ProsThey heat the building in the winter. They don't always air condition it in the summer. If you like being pigeon holed with no chance for advancement, this is the place for you.

ConsThey don't even pay severance when they let you go. They have taken away all of their benefits. You are under constant video surveillance when in the building, even in the rest rooms.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you trust people you don't have to keep them under constant video surveillance.

This company is most likely shutting down operations in AZ.

    Eng Aide (Former Employee)
    Scottsdale, AZ

    ProsA pay check I guess.

ConsMismanagement. This company laid off all the techs on a project and then could not supply the product under contract to the government which caused a large fine to be levied.

Advice to Senior ManagementLook for some type of work you can handle, greater at walmart comes to mind.

    Good ole boys club

    Staff Software Engineer (Former Employee)
    Scottsdale, AZ

ProsGreat place to ride the bus to retirement.

ConsTreat salary employees like hourly right up to the point where hourly employees get paid overtime. Terrible culture. Treat employees poorly. Constantly taking benefits away from employees. Little to no growth potential.

Advice to Senior ManagementRetire! All the old management needs to retire and get some fresh heads in there that can look past "the way it's always been". Right now I'd say there isn't a more dead-end engineering company in Phoenix. Chris Marzilli is the worst CEO I've ever had the displeasure of working for. He spreads the culture of devaluing the employees. He's been poison to C4S.

Used to be a good place for a career-

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Scottsdale, AZ

ProsSome skilled employees/managers & good compensation

ConsDuring the defense bubble, after 9/11, GD-C4 Systems was a great place for challenging work and stable, good income; however, in the past three years, given the downturn in the Defense business, the good old boy network is in full force at C4S - resulting in slow layoff’s for the prior three years. Never a massive number to avoid reporting, or any negative financial obligations to the business – therefore, putting the treatment of employee’s as lowest priority causing a horrible work environment, employees have no idea what day will be their last. Political sabotage of jobs remaining based on good old boy network. Hostile takeover from the East - Taunton, MA, leadership - old GTE players - now in control to try and shrink the business (rumors of yelling in meetings and blame). Also, the new Taunton leadership facilitates lay off’s being implemented by managers who haven’t truly managed employee’s being released. This management sometimes listens to the West politico on how to reduce staff, protecting their buddies or people who brown nose management and never have an opinion (does not care about the business, just keeping their job) - so most highly respected and skilled employee's are NOT being retained. Prediction - further reductions in force and Scottsdale closure. Regarding impact to demographics - no females remaining in senior leadership - highly paid females appear to be the focus of reductions, even from male worker point of views - perhaps senior leadership rely on Phebe N. Novakovic as CEO to offset these actions, but even Ms. Novakovic’s staff is comprised of 23 males and only one female.

Advice to Senior ManagementToo little too late - communicate with the organization - it is obvious you are afraid to be put on the spot for questioning, that leadership does not really understand how to solve the problems now and are in a reactionary mode. Phebe - fire Sr. Management of C4 Systems and the next level down and start over.

Used to be a good place to work.

Senior Software Engineer Staff (Former Employee)
    Scottsdale, AZ

ProsGood, technically competent people. Projects are really challenging, interesting and fun. Interesting people to work with.

ConsManagement has no idea what they are doing. They have not diversified and appear to not be interested in diversifying. They have no loyalty to employees who've worked for the company for years. There are few interesting projects left. They are loosing their best employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet a plan. You will not stay in business at your current rate of decline.

A company with clueless management and complete disregard for the Engineers. The old boy network rules this company.

    Systems Engineer II (Former Employee)
    Blackwood, Wales (UK)

ProsIt paid the bills and there was some good banter amongst the down-trodden troops. The salary was good for the location and the housing rent was reasonably low.

ConsThis company rarely assigns work to people who have the skill to do the task. You will most likely find yourself pushed into a role where you under perform whilst someone else is under performing in a task that you are capable of undertaking. This is entirely due to the incompetence of functional management, who try to label everyone the same because it's easier than getting off their backsides to discover what skills their employees have.

Advice to Senior ManagementSenior management on the other side of the pond, you were making good progress by getting rid of some of the useless managers. Chris Marzilli, wake up! There are still managers who have been making a hash of things for years, I guess they talk very well but you should be sacking them not promoting them!

Morale is low and they are laying off very valued key employees. There is no rationale to the firing line.

    Program Manager (Current Employee)
    Scottsdale, AZ

ProsI have worked there for many years with very talented and brilliant people including: engineers and technicians from all specialties. I started when it was still Motorola and the job opportunities were endless. General Dynamics changed everything and not for the better.

ConsI have felt for the last three years that General Dynamics has been working to shutter the plant, and they have not been aggressively trying to go after after new business and contracts.

They no longer care about the people. They have diminished pensions drastically. They do not care about their employees, all they care about is their bottom line. I have always said, never get between GD and a dollar, you will never win.

General Dynamics has been a profitable business and to see the lack of compassion is disgusting. Keep the people who work and lose the ones that sit in their offices all day doing nothing.

It has become a paper mill and not a working environment.

Advice to Senior ManagementRead what I wrote above. Be honest with everyone at the plant about the long term goals of the Scottsdale plant. Put your self in our shoes.

Could be a could place to work... but it isn't...

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

    Pros- Salary is decent
    - Benefits are decent (but that was slowing changing when I left, they decided at one point that since we weren't using all of our paid time off that they would just decrease the accrual rate for everyone since we didn't need it)
    - They do have interesting projects and programs.

Cons- You have to leave the company and come back to get any type of promotion.
    - The software architect is a .NET drone and truly believes that .NET is the right tool for the job even if it is obviously not. You would think after the 3rd time of trying to build complex applications using .NET which have requirements to run on Linux and using Mono to meet this requirement and failing miserably every time that you would learn from these mistakes. Think again...
    - Performance isn't based on your work output. It is based on how well you brown nose with your superiors.
    - Those interesting projects and programs can turn into nightmares if said software architect is involved.
    - When the projects that said architect is involved with fail, he will instantly throw his team under the bus to save himself.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake advice and input from subordinates seriously. If a program or project is failing and there are common denominators on a series of failed projects then you probably have the reason as to why they failed. Provide better opportunities for promotions and career advancement. AND don't take criticism so personally as everyone there wants to better the company.

Great long career until the last few years...

    Business Manager (Former Employee)
    Scottsdale, AZ

ProsThey pay very well and the employees are hard workers

ConsThey are in a death spiral. The current management has shown no backbone to make the tough decision to reduce the level of principals, directors and VPs while reducing the workforce. The result is that these senior managers just get re-assigned elsewhere to keep making the same dumb decisions

Advice to Senior ManagementStop worrying about your bonuses and making short term decisions only. Remember that this is an organization made up of people and by treating the people fairly they will work hard for the company.

Finally, if the best qualification for a job is that they are your friend, you need to reconsider that job assignment - cronyism only works in the short term.
