I worked at General Dynamics C4 Systems full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Employees in same skill set as yourself are fun to work with. Coworkers share knowledge with each other. If you enjoy working overtime and traveling, there is plenty of that.

    Cons

Intense work schedule, very little time at home with family, failing Increment 2 equipment and eventually the contract. It tends to be a good ole boy network giving better jobs to those not qualified. No raises for 3 years running while upper management / VPs are getting huge raises year after year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure you take care of your employees since they are the people that do the work to make you look better. The less you give to them, the more of them will leave. Have the people that are actually qualified promoted to better jobs to show rest of employees that hard work does pay off.

I have been working at General Dynamics C4 Systems full-time

    Pros

A few good people left and decent pay.
    Easy commute.

    Cons

Beware of the 4-5 star ratings that the someone is posting on here because no one who really works here thinks this company is doing well.
Poor management which is completely out of touch with its staff and the best practices of the industry.
They rate people on number of hours worked instead of how efficient or well their work is. Therefore you have people rewarded for taking 20 hours to perform a 5 minute task.
All design decisions are made by the chosen few and all other input is discarded.
The cash cow contract of this company is going to expire in a couple of years and then the real layoffs will begin.
People are jumping ship by the boat loads because of poor management and vision.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rate the good engineers by their actually work which will involve finding out what they are doing, and how well/efficient they are at it (BTW, SLOC and hours worked will not give you this information).
Don't treat everyone the same. You have good engineers and engineers that need to improve.

P.S. I will assume that GD management will ignore this or write a five star review above it.

    Pros

    Large variety of jobs.
People are pleasant to work with.
    Team members are supportive

    Cons

Lack of work effects management behaviors in a negative way, including a lack of honesty with employees, hiring contract labor while laying off employees doing the same work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Be honest with your employees

    Pros

Was good when it was Motorola

    Cons

Before it was a great company to work for when it was Motorola.
Small projects were the key...one gets canceled, always had a place to do.
Now...all big jobs...one gets cancelled and hundreds/thousands get laid off

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

Good salaries, bonuses for management, can hide and do nothing if you want. Big company so theoretically you have opportunities to move around.

    Cons

No new work coming in. Future of company is being thrown away in favor of meeting this year's financial numbers so management gets their bonuses. As such, decisions are made solely on how it will affect the quarters or years financial numbers, not the future revenue or health of the company down the road. Unethical practices in running the business and dealing with customers. Several VPs are truly incompentent and are universally disliked by the employees, but no one has the guts to fire them. Good ole' boy club at the expense of hiring the right people for the job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire yourself. Your shortsightedness is killing the company. Get rid of none performing VPs and directors. Ask your employees who they are. They will tell you. These management figures are causing people to leave in droves. Soon only the people that can't find jobs elsewhere will be left. Without these changes, the company will be gone or sold within 2 years.

Started out great, but some departments not keeping up with technology.

I have been working at General Dynamics C4 Systems full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

If you are in the right department, you can grow your career by moving to projects that interest you. Some projects are great, using at least current technology, if not cutting edge. Company budget and planning allows for being able to retain people when times get tough, though layoffs can still occur.

    Cons

Some department managers are more concerned about staffing their jobs than allowing you to make career moves within the company. You may find yourself bounced from job to job becoming a "jack of all trades" which is great if that is what you want for your career. Not all department managers are this way, but if you get one, you only seem to have to quit to make a career move.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Paying engineers well isn't the only way to retain them. You have to allow them to work on jobs that make them happy in order to have them stay.

I worked at General Dynamics C4 Systems full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

I am truly struggling to find any pros. However, the sheer size of the company has kept it afloat, despite gross mismanagement.

    Cons

There is an inherent "good ol' boys" network in senior management . If you're not in it, and you dare to have your own opinions, you will not last long here.

While there are truly some good people that work here, they are far and few between and they soon move on to greener pastures.

With credit to Fernando Lamas, it is clear that this company runs by the saying "It is better to look good than to be good.". What is truly unfortunate is that the company fails at both.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Explore what your upper and middle management is truly accomplishing. Are they serving the greater good of the company, or are they simply trying to gain the most benefit through the least amount of work for themselves?

There are only so many GD business units that can be absorbed by C4S before you'll have to face the harsh reality of the mess that has been created throughout C4S as a whole.

I truly don't know what can be done to save this company. Unfortunately, I fear it's too far gone.
