    Pros

The rich processes and deep talent pool offers a great working atmosphere for younger employees to learn and grow. The time off is generous and the benefits are appropriate.

    Cons

This business segment is very dependent upon the defense sector. If defense dollars dry up this is an at-risk place to be when budgets are cut.

The Company So Bad, They Can Ruin Other Companies

    Pros

I am truly struggling to find any pros. However, the sheer size of the company has kept it afloat, despite gross mismanagement.

    Cons

There is an inherent "good ol' boys" network in senior management . If you're not in it, and you dare to have your own opinions, you will not last long here.

While there are truly some good people that work here, they are far and few between and they soon move on to greener pastures.

With credit to Fernando Lamas, it is clear that this company runs by the saying "It is better to look good than to be good.". What is truly unfortunate is that the company fails at both.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Explore what your upper and middle management is truly accomplishing. Are they serving the greater good of the company, or are they simply trying to gain the most benefit through the least amount of work for themselves?

There are only so many GD business units that can be absorbed by C4S before you'll have to face the harsh reality of the mess that has been created throughout C4S as a whole.

I truly don't know what can be done to save this company. Unfortunately, I fear it's too far gone.

    Pros

The work I do directly benefits Soldiers, it is the reason i come in every day. Salary/benefits are comparable to other like-companies. The company seems to be making forward progress after almost five really ugly years.

    Cons

Little transparency, employees only engage with management when an executive memo comes out, Layoffs seem to have declined, although we all remain on high-alert for our manager to arrive at our cube with the HR rep.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust your employees with the vision going forward, stove-piping information, a little here and a little there doesn't improve morale or the belief that C4 will survive.

    Pros

Great atmosphere and benefits. Very flexible with work/life balance.

    Cons

Hard to grow within the company, not made aware of additional projects

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider helping employees advance their career. Also, raises and awards would be beneficial to keep good employees.

Near Term Financial goals out-way long term growth and customer satisfaction.

Current Employee - Program Manager  in  Taunton, MA
Current Employee - Program Manager in Taunton, MA

    Pros

Good people to work with at the lower levels.
Great company to work for over the years.
Good Engineering staff (as long as they are allowed to do their jobs)

    Cons

Too much emphasis on near term financial goals versus customer satisfaction.
No long term Program wins due to forcing GD products on customers.
Upper managers put in place with little skills. Promotions based on personality or how well liked vs Job performance.
No Job opportunities unless you are a relative of upper manager, are well liked (but no skills) or want to move to other site.
Upper management still getting bonuses at the sacrifice of lower level employee benefits and salaries. Oh, by the way, thanks for the Steak tips Friday. It sure made up for the lack of a raise this year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I understand financial goals are important, but too much emphasis is placed on the goals vs keeping your customers happy.
Prime example is WINT INC2 and 3 programs will not carry C4S more than a couple of years. Start asking your customer what they want vs telling them what they need.
Have your Management staff go through objective analysis of skillsets not only based on supervisor input, but on input from all levels who interact with your managers.
Have your customer rate the Management staff as done in years past and really analyze those results and make changes.

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee in Kilgore, TX

    Pros

I don't think there are any good reasons to work for GDSATCOM any more.

    Cons

As others have mentioned the management is the largest problem. All of management acts as if their hands are tied and they have no ability to make any kind of change. To follow that up they have the Nazi IT department from Hades. Don't expect to get anything out of them in a timely manner - they'll just dump more and more paperwork on you so your request will be buried.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Buy it back from GD. This company was so much better as VertexRSI. Get rid of highest tier of mangement (if they're even still there), and beg the old GM from Kilgore (Jeff) to come back and run the show.

Former Employee - Test Engineer Senior Staff in Scottsdale, AZ

    Pros

We work with first rate equipment & software tools and first rate IT support. Communications with middle management is excellent.

    Cons

The layoffs appear to be totally arbitrary. Absolutely key people have been laid off, leaving voids in the ability for the rest of us to effectively do our jobs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think before you lay someone off. Will that person's departure significantly affect co-workers or result in the position going unfilled for an extended time?

Current Employee - Mechanical Engineer in Scottsdale, AZ

    Pros

My peers have been fantastic to work with. There are plenty of people who enjoy solving engineering problems and do so for the right reasons. My direct bosses and managers have been excellent as well. Salary seems very competitive.

    Cons

The management structure can feel top heavy at times, and the building doesn't have much natural lighting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The drab tan/gray cubicles could use some updating.
