I have been working at General Dynamics Information Technology

    Pros

The benefits are very comparable and competitive with other company's in the industry. High volume travel increases salary through per diem expenses.

    Cons

Personal interaction with company leaders is virtually non-existent; work-place climate surveys do not occur; daily timecard input are distracting and unnecessary for most employees in my group; chain of command/ supervisory chain is confusing and often contradictory from office to office.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow more employee flexibility and negotiations to better balance work/travel commitments. For those employees who travel 25% or more of the time, additional flex time and or project-based, results-based assignments could be implemented to allow employees to take the best advantage of their own time and schedules without interfering with routine requirements thus increasing overall actual productivity of the employee.

I have been working at General Dynamics Information Technology full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Never bored, plenty of variety on the contract I am on.

    Cons

If the contract you are on is lost, you have a couple weeks to find a new job internally of they will kick you to the curb.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Employees are assets.

I have been working at General Dynamics Information Technology

    Pros

Growth potential, educational opportunities and advancement due to the number of positions and locations available to work.

    Cons

The same institutional problems of large companies exist. Culture changes needed and more action vs. words on taking care of employees who make money for them by supporting customers on the front line.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You should listen to more than other senior managers to get a real understanding of what goes on at the workers level in resolving issues and improving what GDIT has done over the last 15 years.

Current Employee - Mid-Level Manager in Fairfax, VA

I have been working at General Dynamics Information Technology full-time

    Pros

    Large web-based training library
The company enjoys a good reputation among customers
Large number of contracts to move between and advance your career (but you will have to work around management to get there)
    Peers

    Cons

Benefits have been cut over the years (including bonuses to lower level management)
Management has difficulty communicating vision and direction
Every time there is an acquisition that company's management replaces the old.
Culture has become 'every man for himself'.
The organization of divisions creates much duplication (higher overhead than necessary)
Feels like a large 'you're on your own' staffing agency

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work to improve communication, vision, and establish a real culture.
As times get tougher, be 'leaders' when it comes to sharing the pain.
Work to develop your people - the cost is worth it as this increases capabilities, lends to culture and maintains reputation
Restore benefits differentiators that used to exist to attract and retain exceptional talent
Streamline the organization to maximize resources and efficiencies

I have been working at General Dynamics Information Technology as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

NONE other than I got a paycheck. Nothing else. Period.

    Cons

Rules only apply to certain people. Racist HR dept in Chesterfield. WORST HR dept and management team ever. Always looking for ways to stick it to you. Too bad I had to give a "star" for ratings. This company doesn't deserve ANY stars.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get some training on how to be leaders, not the Hitler kind. Depts should also learn to work together instead of against each other.

I have been working at General Dynamics Information Technology full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The only reason is the paycheck.

    Cons

Ngd software is lousy, internet crashes frequently, callers can't seem to access their accounts or applications, and general dynamics asks for perfection amid all the computor chaos and the position is a 4 month temporary job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Back off of the corporate perfectionism, fix the lousy ngd software.
