I have been working at General Dynamics Land Systems full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Working environment at the lower levels was enthusiastic and information flowed freely to facilitate completion of job specific tasks.

    Cons

Management often tried to stop the free flow of information across departments due to trust issues at that level. This fostered an "accomplishment in spite of management" mentality.

    Advice to Management

Management needed to realize their "kingdoms" could not survive alone, and throwing other departments under the bus only showed the customer an incompetent organization.

I worked at General Dynamics Land Systems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

It was work and occasionally exciting when the project worked. The annual golf tourney and Christmas party were usually pretty nice. HR had drop-dead gorgeous women, which made it hard to concentrate on the conversation.

    Cons

Job promotions were announced, only after a candidate had already been selected. No chance of moving up the chain, only a lateral move - no pay raise - more responsibility for the same amount of pay and stature.

    Advice to Management

Get management that can run a business. The upper management was only interested in keeping their jobs by sacrificing others that actually did the work!

    Pros

Corporate benefits package is strong; salaries are competitive; 9/80 work schedule provides flexibility

    Cons

Ostensible commitment to ethics and work-life balance, but beneath the surface there is no genuine regard for people as anything other than expendable. Communications are less than candid. Reductions in force are heartless executions.

    Advice to Management

Tell people the truth, especially if you plan to lay them off eventually.

The benefits package is incredible and the 9/80 work schedule with every other Friday off. The project was cutting edge and allowed me to enhance my skills.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the people that are doing the day-to-day work and communicate that information throughout the company.
