I worked at General Dynamics Robotic Systems full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Excellent people, good to work with, some of the best in the business, Lots of real life robotic experience to learn from. Very research-oriented. Robotics Collaborative Technology Alliance is a great way to stay in touch with the latest in robotics.

    Cons

Customer has been very fickle recently, largely because there is so much competition in the robotics field that they get swayed in many directions, and the Army has had difficulty finding their direction. Funding has suffered. GDRS reports to Land Systems which mostly makes big armored vehicles. They don't always understand the very high-tech, researchy, demo-oriented work that GDRS does. Also, GDRS engineering has had difficulty managing and maintaining the very large code base that has resulted from all the technology development.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You guys have done a good job under exceedingly trying circumstances. Keep your finger on the pulse of research in robotics.

I worked at General Dynamics Robotic Systems as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Flexible Hours; GDRS is staffed by helpful, intelligent, easy going people. GDRS has the tools and equipment to get the job done. In the event of the occasional lack of something, there are enough resources to bootstrap a solution from existing materials and equipment. The work environment is clean and comfortable.

    Cons

The vending machine in the lunch room is reminiscent of a food vendor in a third world street market - actually worse. Too many complaints about the quality of the free coffee from those who still drank it. GDRS is controlled (restricted, restrained, choked, and suffocated) by GD Land Systems. Lack of vision and contingency planning.

I have been working at General Dynamics Robotic Systems

    Pros

Bleeding edge technologies in a major growth field. Exposure to a variety of engineering roles. Multidisciplinary teams of electrical, mechanical, software, and systems engineering.

    Cons

Chaotic, management not experienced with large scale programs, management with little or no experience working elsewhere. This company invented "not invented here." Lack of leadership and communications. Someone has to be empowered to set the goals and keep everyone marching toward it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to employees, you might learn something! Tour some other companies and chat with their management about best practices. Realize that working in the same place 20 or more years makes you as well rounded as a cube.

I worked at General Dynamics Robotic Systems

    Pros

The work is interesting; they often have challenging schedules; many good people. Excellent work hours and flex-time support, and overall benefits are good. Can't beat the customers, mostly military.

    Cons

There has been a recent decline of government contracts in robotics, yet GDRS has remained committed to the vehicular robot market; recent corporate cutbacks suggest that rebounding in this economy will be difficult. Too much emphasis on research and development, insufficient stress on commercial production.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve commercial applications to include pre-existing vehicle systems - in other words, adapt our systems to multiple vehicles. Expand product lines to embrace all remote-able or automated systems, even if not vehicular. Make quality, continuous improvement, auditing, and Kaizen activities an overhead that is budgeted for every department.
