GMI: Solid Company, Great Benefits, Conformity a Must.

Marketing Manager (Current Employee) Minneapolis, MN

ProsFabulous employer to learn classic marketing skills! Brand management expertise bar none. Excellent experience in managing products & people. Summer work hours are a big bonus. Salaries and benefits are great.

ConsCulture is lacking in diversity: multi-cultural acceptance only works here if you graduated from the same school, talk alike and think alike. GMI likes to have employees that are from varying ethnicities, but conformity to the norm is demanded. Individual performance ratings are skewed by division & work group targets/quotas-- so recognition is not as fair as it should be. Stay away from the foodservice division as I hear it functions with far fewer resources against it.

Advice to Senior ManagementWalk the talk more in respecting style and cultural differences.

General Mills is Worth the Weather

Consumer Insights Manager (Current Employee) Minneapolis, MN

ProsThe people I work with are amazing - intelligent, creative, determined- and in most cases, all working toward the same goal. The company is one of the best with regard to benefits, and has been named one of the best places to work for many years running. I use many of the benefits, including the onsite daycare, the medical staff, the fitness center, the physical therapist, the credit union, the auto service center - I could go on... I've never worked for someone at GMI who didn't feel had my best interests in mind at all times.

ConsLocation. If you don't like snow and cold, it's not a match. I'm not a native, and the cold is pretty bitter, but I've found that the summers in Minneapolis are worth the crappy winters.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep it up.

General Mills- great place to work coming out of school!

Team Leader (Current Employee) Hannibal, MO

ProsGreat hands on work, especially for those just out of school. They do a great job of recruiting engineers or those with technical backgrounds and putting them in leadership roles right away. It is great if you have a techincal background but don't want to spend your days sitting behind a computer. If you work for GMI as a Team Leader, you will be out on the production floor, working with employees and also working with senior management on strategic decisions. When you start, you will be managing employees and having a direct impact on the company within no time. You will be able to keep production lines running and making decisions quickly. It is rare to be out of college for only a few months and be able to manage people, but General Mills does this. They push you and give you lots of responsibilities but do provide an excellent support structure and resources while you are new. They also do a great job of netowrking and sending people to other areas (especially if you are in a small town) so you can meet many people holding leadership roles throughout the company.

Finally, the pay is great and very competitive. Salary is good and the bonuses are good as well.

ConsLocations (primarily in the midwest). Also be prepared to work more than 40 hrs a week. If you work at a plant, plants run 24 hrs a day (and most during some weekends), so you will have to work some off shift time as well. But sometimes working offshift can be fun but you need to learn to balance you work and life.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey are doing an excellent job!

An Amazing Place to Work - if you can handle the location

    Buyer (Former Employee) Minneapolis, MN

ProsIncredible Company. They know how to treat their employees. At headquarters they have all the perks - Free gym, a dry cleaners, bank, hair salon, and even - get this - a FREE health clinic with doctors, dentists, optometrists, etc. Everybody there is super nice and supportive. They want you to do well both personally and professionally. Lots of opportunities for big projects and to get noticed by senior management. Everybody is approachable. They even offer social events.

ConsIts in Minneapolis. Its cold, dark, and in the middle of nowhere. It is easy to get lost in the shuffle - there are 4000+ people working in Minneapolis alone.

Advice to Senior ManagementRelocate to San Diego. This will curb the talent drain of young professionals fleeing to the coasts.

    Great place to start career.

Business Planning Associate (Current Employee) Rogers, AR

ProsGreat place to start a career. Excellent training and development. Top tier CPG company. Very fun a relaxed office to work in. Great benefits. Great place to meet friends and network. Open an relaxed culture (not to over run by HR policies) Car and great health care. 3 to 4 years of experience should set your resume up nice.

ConsLimited upward mobility - long wait times to promotions. Mobility overly emphasized. Standard strict development plan with no flexibility. Overly concerned with minority and diversity objectives. Minneapolis is very cold in the winter. Other offices in Philly, Cincinnati, and Phoenix - not my first choice in a place to live.

Advice to Senior ManagementSenior management work styles too cookie cutter. Need to diversify people at the top of the organization (not race and sex diversity, but style diversity). More action and less talk.
