    Pros

    Allowed a lot of freedom in direction I wanted to take my work. Wonderful teams and good bottom level managers.

    Cons

    They lost the culture of the 80's and 90's that made it such a great place to work. Lots of perks but workloads are heavy. Used to be too many layers of management that have recently been cut so perhaps that might make things better.

    Cut your own salaries.

    I have been working at General Mills

    Pros

    General Mills offers a great work/life balance. I never feel pressured to work long hours. In IT, you sometimes have to work odd hours to accomodate business users but that is often mitigated by comp time.

    The atmosphere is great. I love the people I work with.

    If you work at the world headquarters, there are many conveniences on campus: a credit union, gym, cafeteria, company store, and gas station / mechanic.

    Cons

    The company makes promises that it sometimes fails to keep. For example, college hires go through a rotation process (three jobs in five years). I, and many people I know, have had their rotations cut short or been forced into particular roles due to reorganizations.

    Some teams are not receptive to new ideas. In particular, I have noted a very strong tendency to "do things the way we always have" regardless of whether that way is any good to begin with.

    Recent layoffs are a drag.

    Depending on the team you work on, you may not have an opportunity to do very impactful work or be recognized for it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Focus on aggregating top talent across the organization. Be more proactive in addressing performance issues. Underperformers can stick around for a long time because the company won't cut them.

    Pros

    Great brands, great training for marketing. Established processes in place. Exceptionally smart and talented people all around you.

    Cons

    Extremely competitive, to the point of it being self defeating. People aren't set up to succeed, and expected to make it all happen - that's their way of cultivating their idea of the 'best' people.

    Pros

    The people you work with are second to none and what keeps me there. Great training for new managers, and above average benefits.

    Cons

    While benefits are excellent, pay lags market average from what I've seen. It's also a very consensus driven company which can sometimes slow down decision making and leave you feeling like you can't always act quickly.

    You can work as hard as you desire

    Cons

    Corporate leadership (lack of), slow promotion timing, Low pay against industry standard, Lack of respect for R&D personnel, Belief that business can grow based on hope and getting "their fair share" without working at it, no direction, two layoffs in three years

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Choose a direction and communicate it to the employees. Too many projects got started and went unfinished due to MANY changes in direction. Research and Development employees are looked at as second class, plant employees are looked at as third class but they are the groups that put the products on the shelves.

    Pros

    The free food is a nice perk.

    Cons

    As a technician you do the majority of the product development without the credit. You are viewed as the lowest on the todum poll and many people will let you know you are. Credit is never assigned to the person who originally developed it. Also, technicians are very underpaid here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Don't start hiring unexperienced people just graduating with their BS as Scientists when you have never allowed current technicians to move to the Scientist level. Not a good move if you want your current experienced techncians to stick with the company.

    Pros

    The culture is amazing. They really care about their people. Great work life balance, great salary and benefits. Summer hours, on-site doctor and other amenities. Challenging work but you are surrounded by brilliant people.

    Cons

    There are a lot of meetings. It is hard to get everything done with the amount of meetings there are. Once you get to an SFA level it is hard to get into the manager level.

    Pros

    Can work at different places and still be accessible to everybody
    Team work is mixed with independent mode of work in customized proportion.
    Lots of eating places, small stores, expositions to drop stress.

    Cons

    More of project inclined than functional, GM does not provide good skills for Oracle Data warehousing, but rather trying to reuse Oracle transactional programming for the DW situation leading to confusion.
    Light environment lets mediocrity to flourish.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Give some training to Oracle contractors of the SAP using Oracle as back end environment.
    Allow contractors to use exercise machines.

    Pros

    Pension, half day Fridays in the summer, strong brands, excellent campus in Golden Valley

    Cons

    Less autonomy than in the past. Work is less rewarding. Have committed to shareholders that General Mills will achieve profit targets through cost cutting. General Mills has strong enough brands where they should have top line growth rather than squeezing the middle of the income statement.

    Sell products that people want.
