I worked at General Motors Powertrain as an intern (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent learning experience; throughout a total of 9 co-op rotations of 3 months each, I gained over 2 years full time experience working in various areas, including Validation & Durability, Analysis, and Development. For each rotation I was given, I was always given a special project to work on, being solely responsible for the management and development. These opportunities allowed me to actively practice the engineering skills learned in the classroom, while at the same time adding solid substance to my resume, and making a very decent wage to boot. If possible, I would highly recommend working here for an internship or co-op.

    Cons

My rotations were only in powertrain segments of GM and other opportunities within the company were never really addressed; I would have liked to see what other careers within the company looked like.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep moving forward with the restructuring of GM! The culture of the new GM is really starting to show, and I look forward to see the improvements continue at time progresses.

I worked at General Motors Powertrain as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

New facility, clean, lots of support. A good place for a young person to start out as a technician. You'll get lots of experience and learn a lot.

    Cons

Low pay for the amount of work and responsibility one is expected to perform. Older experienced technicians will want to avoid working here because you're just another low life and you'll never live up to GM expectations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management doesn't care. They know workers are lined up around the block to get in.

I worked at General Motors Powertrain full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits. Lots of job opportunities if you are willing to try "new" things. Great employee product discounts.

    Cons

General sense of complacency, no motivation to go "above and beyond". Old boy network firmly in place; only a small minority involved in serious product development. Old mentality led to this company's problems. The writing was on the wall for a long time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Bloated workforce considering the output.

I have been working at General Motors Powertrain full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

This is a brand new company and it was created in 2009. It's really a great place to work where all employees new to each other and many opportunities to develop as individual. The team is quite young and its location is very convenient. Very exciting production plant and facilities. Very good training tools and opportunities. Very good work/life balance at the company.

    Cons

As it's new company the procedures are/may not be very well established and sometimes you'll have to struggle your way in getting some results and create first presedences.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep it up and all the best!
