    I worked at General Motors

    Pros

GM really knows how to impress its interns, letting them borrow any production car they want, and taking them on tours of testing facilities, design studios and to sporting events in the Detroit area throughout the summer months. Compensation is higher than its competitors, and working in manufacturing gives the added benefit of earning overtime. Apart from this, GM presents a great working environment, with some of the smartest group of engineers and assembly workers you will ever meet. You will at times learn more from a stamp-press operator, who has been doing that job their entire life, than you would from school. Yes, GM is still reeling from the bad press of the auto-bailout, but after working there for a few months, you will realize that this company is much more than just a punching bag for political pundits, and is genuinely a great company to work for.

    Cons

The biggest problem is the work-place shock of working in a unionized environment and seeing the hourly-salary divide at times. Hours in manufacturing can also be difficult, as standard work hours are from 5AM - 3PM, and you may be asked to come in as early as midnight at times.

I worked at General Motors as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Some great products to be proud of. Design environment and historic campus is huge which is a pro and a con. There is great leadership at the top and cronyism is gradually being weeded out by rechallenging leadership in new positions. There is hope and opportunity.

    Cons

Warren is run down. Contract employees have no personal time, few holidays, little chance to advance, get a review, raise, or increased vacation time. This is dictated by each contract house but runs through a common HR filter. It is symptomatic of the industry and may be the same at other OEMs. So much experience was either let go, retired or moved on. Interdisciplinary and interdepartmental functionality is strained. Communication is complicated and made more so by self serving leaders who control rather than enable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Juvenile behaviour in management is corrosive. Lifers show up to bank days until retirement. Union workers, contract employees and direct hires have entirely different motivations, bosses, and opportunities which incapacitates common goals, teamwork, and true cultural development.

I worked at General Motors as an intern

    Pros

Very lax atmosphere, coworkers were friendly, and superiors didn't make you feel pressured

    Cons

Exactly the pros. It sometimes felt like no one got anything done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Definitely need to pair up interns with a stronger mentor-program. I felt as if I was on my own most of the time (which is fine, sometimes that's just the way it is) but for someone who was new to this industry and wanting to learn more, I felt like I was on a stranded island.

I have been working at General Motors

    Pros

I don't find anything exciting specially for seasoned developers here at GM.

    Cons

The management is clueless other than they know how to talk non-sense. Most of the management are coming as wholesale from Dell, HP and company alike and most of the people are worthless. The main qualification to become manager is to NOT know IT. If you haven't been to India then this is the place where you should join where you see husband/wife/friends working there. The managers are corrupt specially working with outsource companies and/or making hiring decisions because they get some kickback. GPSC is another corrupt place in the whole organization. It's SAD!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Thank you for making a mess. You don't own the company as the company was bailed out by the tax-payer (US tax-payer) therefore for you guys don't care I guess.

    Pros

Great company to work for. Best working environment I have seen in my 18 years of overall working experince. Willing to mentor, share knowladge, help each other to achive end goal.

    Cons

Need to negotiate smart before sign the offer. HR don't tell all you can get.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Advise to HR : They should offer most benefits in term of vacation, sign up bonus because when one finds out after accepting offer, they feel cheated.

    Pros

Working in GM, you can get a lot of support. If you want to make something out, you can live very well. If you want live a comfortable life, this is also a good place for you.

    Cons

Sometimes it looks like nobody care what you are doing. You are just a small nail, the company can run very smoothly without you. You may not exist in some people's eyes especially when you are working in the r@d.
