    I have been working at General Motors full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    * Competitive compensation/bonus and other benefits including 401K (Michigan cost of living is comparatively lower as compared to West coast).
    * Good work/life balance.
    * Job stability is good so a lot of people work the entire life and retire from GM.
    * Tuition assistance is generous.
    * Vacations and holidays are also generous.
    * Access to company cars (if you are in the right group).

    Cons

    * Very mediocre engineering talent (at least the area where I work). A lot of people rely on taking credit for others work.
    * Does not attract competitive engineering talent and hiring/interview process is very poor. You can't hire smart technical personnel by asking behavioral questions.
    * Extremely politically - As a result no one wants to make critical decisions and a lot of unfair promotions are given from my perspective.
    * After a certain level, it's very hard to move up in the company. As a result a lot of employees if they hit that level comparatively early in their career and get stuck in the same level for few years end up becoming very mediocre and unenthusiastic at work.
    * A lot of unnecessary meetings and there is a culture to "look busy".
    * Very bureaucratic - Too many useless processes to get simple things done.
    * Most of the time work is not challenging as automotive industry is not as fast paced as some of the other industries.
    * Very few things to do in Michigan.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - The company talks a lot about the new GM but that also needs to be reflected internally. A lot of old school mentality that needs to be changed.
    - GM needs to promote young talent who posses a "can do" attitude and focus on delivering quality products.
    - GM may find hard to retain talented individuals if they are not rewarded for their hard work. How can the management expect talented people to keep shining if the mediocre and talented get stuck at the same level after few years with more or less same salary and benefits?
    - Upper management needs to be more willing to hear employee concerns and take criticism. A lot of key decisions are taken just to please bosses/upper management.

    I worked at General Motors as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

    Close knit community with coworkers in same area. Great way to make connections. Able to speak with leadership and communicate ideas and concerns.

    Cons

    Overtime is looked down upon since you are supposed to finish work in shift. Very stressful with various projects to complete and customers to assist in one day.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Hire enough people to carry out the designated projects and expected duties instead of trying to have the employees spread so thin to save money.

    General Motors Intern

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee  in  Warren, MI

    I have been working at General Motors as an intern for more than a year

    Pros

    The people that work here are awesome. As an intern, I never had the feeling of being unable to ask someone for help. People are busy but they are more than welcome to take some time to explain things. They will also take time out of their day to explain what their job is or what their function does. Depending on who you get for a supervisor/manager has a big impact on how your experience is.

    Cons

    General Motors is a slower moving company but that comes with size.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Use some of your influence to implement what your employees are suggesting. Also, do not put all your effort to reaching the short goals. Try to focus on implementing some of the suggestions from employees and meeting your goals will follow.
