    Great Operations, Tough Company

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsInteresting business challenges, strong safety culture, exciting growth through acquisition means plenty of career opportunities. Anyone with railroad operations, sales, customer service, maintenance of way or locomotive maintenance experience - particularly those with a willingness to relocate - would be well served by joining G&W.

ConsSenior management not always on the same page, still some old-school railroaders in senior management. Since railroads run 24/7, 365 operations employees need to be willing to work in all kinds of weather.

Advice to Senior ManagementCorporate folks need to listen to people in regional leadership teams.

Grasp changes or work morale will continue to decrease

    IT Consultant (Current Employee)
    Nowhere, OK

ProsBenefits, benefits, benefits, benefits, and benefits

ConsNeed more process improvement, too many people are being paid less to do more, a need for a project team to handle projects, there is no room to grow unless you been there for more than 7 years.

Advice to Senior ManagementSr Management need to work more with employees and learn day to day issues, realize that employees are afraid to voice their concern because they feel they are not being heard, not valued enough, or will be fired, and develop an incentive program for employees to show them they are needed

Immature Management staff focused on fraternization and gossip

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsThere is absolutely nothing good about this company. You are better off for working for another rail provider.

ConsManagement plays favoritism full of incompetent individuals, work processes are outdated and mundane. No sense of urgency and total disregard for employee suggestions to make processes more efficient. The company culture is focused on intimidation to prevent employees from working at other rail partners companies. Human Resources is a joke!

    Advice to Senior ManagementGrow up!

    Not very good

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsRailroad retirement and benefits. Free parking. Nice locations and overall friendly atmosphere.

ConsPoor management and leadership. If you like working long hours and not learning much, this is a place for you. Very little recognition of good workers. Too much playing favorites.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou used to be good as a mid-sized company. With all the acquisitions and expansion, you guys are out of your league and out of touch with today's needs.

High pay, high stress, low quality of life

    Train Dispatcher (Current Employee)
    Saint Albans, VT

ProsOne of the best jobs with no experince or degree required. Federal rules guarentee you will never work more than 9 hours a day. Excellent pay and benefits. Outstanding railroad retirment

Cons24/7/365 job. Antiquated HR polices. Little to no input on day to day operations. No local HR rep. Due to federal regulations and the seriousness of the job, there is a high attritation rate. Can be extremely stressful

Advice to Senior ManagementARDC needs office oversight. There are no written office policies or procedures which make it difficult to maintain a standard of service.

I feel they understand that the employees are a big part of making the company great.

    Locomotive Operator (Current Employee)
    Sheridan, WY

ProsVery personal, crews that I work with respect each other. Everyone is great at their job and is always willing to step up and help when needed. They all go above and beyond, every day. When you attend an event, company dinner, etc, the HR staff know and call you by name. You don't have to tell them who you are, they recognize right away. Makes you feel like an actual person and not a number. Great benefits and very little cost out of check.

ConsPay could be a bit higher but there is always opportunity for some overtime.

    Prosgreat benefits. railroad retirement. hmm.

Conssome managers are out of touch with reality - it's no long 1970. lot of turnover. poor technology.

Advice to Senior ManagementSenior management is great, but I don't necessarily think they see the problems that go on at the lower level.
