    Pros

Great Co-workers. Very understanding of each other and supportive. Be normal, sane, and take care of yourself and people will respect you for it.

    Cons

Higher management (corporate) doesn't care about anything but money. Some departments still have the good ol boy mentality. Staffing issues are turned to deaf ears when brought up to management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees. They are the boots on the ground.

I have been working at Genesis Health System full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The employees work pretty well within each shift
Training opportunities are abundant and usually free CEU's
    Working on Magnet Status
Management, in my experience, has been easy to approach

    Cons

Health benefits are poor. People are leaving because they have become so expensive.
Pay is low compared to other states. Makes you feel like you aren't valued.
A peer does the scheduling on most units. Leads to conflicts.
Almost impossible to get the days off work that you request, even months in advance.
Patient to nurse ratios are high
Outsourcing just about everything they can to save a buck and letting go people who have been there for many years

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lower the nurse to patient ratios if safety is truly a top concern.
Pay better. It will lead to better quality staff.
Take care of your staff with better benefits and stop discriminating and shaming them based on the size and health. It's not motivational, rather actually humiliating. I don't even use the insurance, I have just seen the struggle from friends.

I have been working at Genesis Health System

    Pros

Working for a company that helps people. Cutting edge technology.

    Cons

The health care industry is becoming a place that needs to improve efficiency but at the same time is not bringing in the money it used to in the past.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This is a time to cut costs and not spend a lot on improvements. Keep what is good and cut waste is the best way to stay on top.

Current Employee - Clinical Position in Davenport, IA

I have been working at Genesis Health System full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Impossible to get fired without massive mistake
    - Rewards experience
    - Nice extra benefits ie. discounts, tickets to events, ect.
    - Good tuition reimbursement

    Cons

    - Terrible management throughout
    - Likes to promote nurses into management positions and reaps the consequences of putting a square peg in a round hole
    - Terrible pay (Lowest in the region)
    - Some upper level managers are members of other organizations that undercut Genesis objectives
    - Company wants to get awards while not providing adequate resources to obtain them.
    - Dangerously low staffing levels for value added positions like nurses
    - Way to much management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get your act together. Way to many managers that have no clue what they are doing. Think carefully about decisions and those making these decisions. There are lots of improvements that could improve efficiency and lower costs that are not being examined.

I have been working at Genesis Health System

    Pros

They are better then Trinity and thats about it.

    Cons

Where to begin. There's more managers then doctors which is a problem. They all seem to have no authority to make and decisions without talking to someone else. Even upper management have to talk to the CEO before the smallest decision can be made. Busy Doctors arent having contracts renewed and the hospital is under staffed in all areas minus management. Pay is the lowest in the state and lowest in the midwest.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You guys think getting rid of a couple executives helped? You need to get rid of all the middle management and give more responsibility to the ones you keep. You need doctors and surgeons to make money for the hospital so keep as many as possible and resign as many as possible. You cant run a hospital without them so stop getting rid of them.

I have been working at Genesis Health System full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Nice benefits/insurance; committee work is supported/encouraged; discounts & perks. Most employees are nice & courteous to each other (when employees are wearing their badges). Security is effective. Volunteering and community involvement is encouraged and appreciated.

    Cons

Management is either micro-managing or out-of-sight/out-of-mind. Non-clinic leadership roles are heavily male. Recent restructuring impacted strong female leaders, which trickles down to female employees who looked at these ladies as mentors. No advancement opportunities for non-clinical staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's rough working for a "leader" who has one foot out the retirement door. Instead of counseling his staff with the recent restructuring, his advice was "I could have told them so." Requests for professional growth opportunities are quickly and quietly quashed; employees who communicate engagement struggles to leadership have been ignored. Relationship building isn't observed.

    Pros

Good pay and great benefits.Paid time off very good.Work schedule great.

    Cons

Management has no pharmacy experience. Physical working conditions bad.Lack of help and work space means unsafe conditions. Antiquated technology.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to listen to the people that do the work everyday. They know what's going on and what needs to be changed.Don't assume what you hear is true without talking to the employee first

I worked at Genesis Health System full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Genesis has great managers who care about employees and its patients. It strives to retain great physicians and gives services to those who are underserved. Many of its services are provided to those who cannot afford to pay.

    Cons

Working sometimes eight days in a row was a bit much at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please continue to trust your long-time employees. They have devoted years of service to the organization because they believe in the care provided. Employees are the heart of an organization.
