Was a better company culture wise before Novartis took over. Still a good company to work for.

I worked at Genoptix full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I liked my coworkers a lot, we had good culture. Good benefits, especially the 401K matching. Fun job. Good work life balance. My supervisor was very understanding when I needed to leave to pick up kids, etc.

    Cons

Far from where I lived (the company moved locations a few years prior). But generally not much bad to say.

    Genoptix Biopharma: Land of Nepotism

I have been working at Genoptix full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - good health benefits and 401k.
    - coworkers are nice and help each other. Very friendly environment (might not last with so many good people leaving). Frequent group lunches.
    - no need to work overtime as promotions are not given based on what you did or do.
    - job stability for now (not sure for how long)

    Cons

    - many hard and efficient workers with strong potential already left or are thinking about leaving, forcing the department to keep hiring new people almost every week. Sometimes current employees report to a new hire with less experience and/or lower degree than them.
    - Biopharma department is getting a new structural reorganization (even more confusing than the old one). Some employees now have two managers (operational and functional) and so are further penalized for career advancement and visibility.
    - employees are not treated equally: some have the ability to have their own project but not given the opportunity, some are kept free until a visible project comes through the door and some are constantly busy with less visible work.
    - existing employees are not promoted based on merit or potential but how visible they are to the upper management. Criteria to be measured for promotion are not transparent to employees. Performance, productivity, potential or relationship with peers is not weighted in personal evaluations. Upper management would rather promote their sycophants than employees that contribute and complete their assigned projects. Clearly this does not encourage employees to be productive or stay with the company.
    - reason given by upper management for lack of promotions to the less favorable staff is non-quantifiable and subjective. Prejudiced judgement calls exclude employees who are different from them.
    - a huge amount of nepotism and politics have impacted negatively the moral and motivation of many employees, decreased trust of upper management and forced many employees to look elsewhere for better career advancement opportunities.
    - getting cross trained can be difficult and is seen as a drawback if one wants to advance.
    - a large proportion of employees are overqualified for the tasks assigned to them - scientists and senior scientists are asked to do regular equipment/room maintenance/cleaning.
    - tremendous amount of paperwork does not always make sense and the reason behind it is rarely explained.

Poor outlook because the company has already lost several workers (some of them with key job functions) that have not been replaced or replaced with less qualified employees. Very high turn around of employees is counter-productive. Moral is very low among the productive workers that do not spend as much time interacting with upper management. Upper management is untrustworthy, lack leadership skills, and lie regularly to their staff. I foresee a drop of productivity and work quality as more efficient workers leave or remain unmotivated.

I have been working at Genoptix full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Genoptix is slowly trying to benchmark compensation, but still comes up short with a majority of the employees. Most managers are hands off and you have the capability of performing your job function without checking in with your supervisor every hour.

    Cons

Approximately 50% of recent promotions within BioPharma has sent a long line of associates to the HR department. Associates with same experience and education are not in an equal manner. Promotions were allowed to employees with past history of being reported to HR - two employees are notorious for making others do their work for them and taking all the credit. While this has been reported to HR, NOTHING has happened. In fact, all the associates are beginning to assume that this method will beget them promotions.

Management still cannot band together and tell their team one message. There are some directors who will tell their team the truth. This truth spreads amongst employees, and we know when all the other directors/associate directors LIE straight to our faces regarding what types of activities will occur.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

At least 10 people in BioPharma are actively seeking jobs. This department has already lost at least 11 employees since last summer. Good luck.

    Pros

Competitive salary for sales and great commission when you get it.

    Cons

A large disconnect between upper management and the field. The hematology lab industry is ripe with competition but your biggest competitor here will be your own company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get everyone on the same page. You can't have your reps out there with large goals, selling their hearts out when corporate can't land the insurance contracts, get pricing to customers in a timely manner, and leverage the Novartis ownership to get things done. The competition is steamrolling Genoptix while upper management concentrates on firing good people and ensuring the remaining sales staff doesn't succeed.

    Pros

Nice people to work with and be willing to help. Being a part of Novartis, has the big brother's support.

    Cons

Compensation not competitive comparing with the rest of Novartis unit, or with some startups or companies in biotech industry. Business growth and reimbursement environment are challenging. Work flow are not scalable or efficient with additional burden of regulation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Raise compensation to be close to Novartis standard an reward good performers room to advance. The smart people are leaving.

I have been working at Genoptix full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Business is good. Salary was great and the co-workers are friendly or at least tolerable. Beautiful Campus! Plenty of pot-luck lunches and holiday celebrations!

    Cons

Been there a few years and getting out now. Genoptix senior management has no strategy or direction. Everyone is looking for a decision maker, but no one is really willingly to make any decisions, because no one has any real authority. The few that have any authority are inaccessible! The Novartis acquisition grew Genoptix, but brought with it so much red tape that a lot of good ideas get stuck in discussion now or take forever to get done. There isn’t much room for employee growth – so don’t expect to move up the ladder quickly. And expect little to no work life balance.

I worked at Genoptix full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits, both health and 401k were superb.
Comfortable, friendly, and professional work environment.
Reasonable work hours and (for me at least) plenty of opportunities for overtime which was great.
Good management system which promotes hard work and helps with progressing careers by providing projects and other opportunities.

    Cons

They were recently purchased by Novartis a few years ago, since then they seem to have given the ax to 2 entire departments along with a few sub-departments. This is only a problem if your job is outsource-able.

Sometimes people who know how the management system works are able to skate by doing barely anything, just by reacting to the notices and warning that they are given. This is only a problem if you get frustrated working with lazy people (not everyones lazy, but there are a few that seem unfireable).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The floor in the dark room in SAN3 needs to NOT be carpet, it's so incredibly dank down under those desks... it could be a fungus swamp. It's scary.
Besides that I enjoyed working there a lot.
