Pros
  • I found the work environment to be very social and fun (in 9 reviews)

  • The base salary isn't the highest, but Gentex has a profit sharing program that is extremely fair and can boost your annual income significantly (in 5 reviews)

    Pros

    Employee benefits are great. Fountain drinks are provided for free with Coke products. Gym in facilities as well. Air conditioning in the summer. Great employees to work with.

    Cons

    Very task oriented with limited opportunities to move up without going to school for engineering. A place to start or end a career not peak.

    Advice to Management

    More emphasis on other aspects on the company besides engineers.

    Pros

    Quarterly bonuses usually in excess of $500 for hourly or $2500 for Salary (depends on quarterly profits and profit shares)

    Paid lunch (20 minutes)

    Access to vending machines/ATMs on site.

    All employees are allowed to have food delivered. Management usually works with you so you can have your food delivered and available when your lunch starts.

    Personal locker with combination lock on site for personal belongings.

    Very clean bathrooms/eating areas.

    They like to hire temps into permanent positions.

    Guidelines, safety, and work environment is well laid out. The plants are clean and it is clear where and when it is safe to walk through a given area.

    Cons

    ---Quality of Life---
    Because lunches are paid they are only 20 minutes long and you are prohibited from leaving the premises during your lunch or breaks.

    Don't expect to get onto 1st shift. It's almost impossible. So many older "career" factory workers are on 1st shift and will not leave it until retirement.

    If you're not salary you do not get taken seriously by management.

    They do a rotating schedule for mandatory overtime on Saturdays and Sundays to avoid any one shift getting blamed for being behind on production . IE 1st shift this week, 2nd shift next week. However, a lot of team leaders make deals with each other to get their teams out of working overtime. Essentially one shift will get stuck working 7 days a week for 2 or 3 weeks in a row. Usually it ends up being 3rd shift.

    When there is a problem on the production floor management tends to stop all production affected and wait (sometimes for hours) for someone to come fix an issue such as a mechanic. Often times it is something simple like power cycling equipment to fix an issue. They don't like to listen to the line workers who use the equipment 40+ hours per week.

    When there is a serious material issue, such as defect, it takes upwards of 6 reports or complaints before something is done about it.

    If hired as a temp, they do not keep you on the shift you have been working. Often times temps get forced into third shift.

    Third shift is terrible. Little to no upper management/backup support through the night.

    ---Overtime---

    Overtime is always mandatory. They will allow you to "find" another employee to cover if you need to but that is often difficult as only a few people are available since so many have overtime in their own areas. If, for whatever reason, you cannot or do not work the overtime they count it against your attendance and will make you use PTO to cover it.

    They are consistently behind production because they accept more work orders than they can reasonably complete in a given time frame.

    Little to no notice of mandatory overtime. The team leaders will try to give you some warning, but there were more than a few times we found out about mandatory Saturday overtime on the way out the door on a Friday.

    ---Training---

    Training was being "improved" when I left the company, however, it still left a lot to be desired. Often a new employee or temp would be brought in and thrown on the line with little to no guidance or actual training on how to operate the machines or assemble parts.

    This lack of training would often cause a line to get behind their daily production goals and this would often lead to mandatory overtime for that line.

    ---Advancement---

    You can advance if you have a college degree.

    They will not "train on the job" or count your experience for any position that requires a degree. This includes management, maintenance, and production support.

    If you obtain a degree through their tuition reimbursement **BEWARE**. This is a contract that requires you to work a minimum set amount of years at the company or you will have to repay the tuition assistance.

    Also, if you obtain a promotion after getting a degree expect to work as if you were selected from the "bottom of the barrel". This means expect to work 3rd shift or very late 2nd shift. You will be required to "put your time in" to earn that salary promotion.

    Advice to Management

    Listen to the PEOPLE who work under you. When there is an issue and one of them proposes a solution, LISTEN. Chances are they know what they are talking about as they use the machines and equipment more than anyone else in the company...including the technicians and maintenance employees. They know how they are supposed to function.

    Increase break times. 10 minute short breaks and 20 minute lunch is not enough. Most of the short breaks are spent walking the 1/4 mile it takes to get to and from the break room, and lunch is so short you have to eat super fast or risk not having enough time.

    Allow people to set an availability. They need notice of overtime (more than a few minutes to 24 hours. A few days would be ideal)

    Understand that those who work at your company are people. They have lives, family, and obligations outside of the production floor that they also must meet as if it were a Job.

    Good Company, lots of growth potential

    Cons

    Tough workload requirements - sometimes 2nd/3rd shift - 7 days a week at times. Pay was not great.

    Pros

    Good quarterly profit-sharing bonuses, pleasant co-workers, supportive atmosphere. Its a good place to gain experience in that people tend to be cooperative rather than competitive in the workplace. Gentex also supports the concept of family first.

    Cons

    Executive leadership is losing sight of the little guys. It's become a cut-throat power struggle at the upper level instead of the cooperation necessary to move the company forward with new products. Need to broaden product lines to remove dependency on the automotive market.

    Pros

    Benefits are alright, and the work place is clean and comfortable

    Cons

    I have worked there for 2+ years. They smile in front of you, and makes you think you are part of family. Then, if you have issues that you are not happy about, they turn on you. My manager actually read my anonymous survey, only to mistakenly slip up in front of me. (He knew about something he couldn't have known had he not read the survey.) They low-ball salary so much that it's insulting, claiming stock options, but those stock options, when you read into it, is worth little when you're leaving; it becomes more of "if you don't like it here, you're leaving with little." People there have "buddy-buddy" attitude; you need to be liked more than anything to be productive. It's okay to be friends, but if that is the most important thing to work there, it's a no-go. Perhaps it is because it's an automotive company, they have this attitude, which I found to be rather obnoxious. If you're a female, you'll probably even have more difficulties, because of those obnoxious guys who makes comments (and yet they're married.)

    Advice to Management

    Looking good outside is nice, but inside, it's stinky.

    Pros

    The office culture was great. Everyone has their role and the company goes above and beyond to keep people happy. I was an intern here and they had just beefed up their intern program, and it truly made for quite a fun summer.

    Cons

    It wasn't always readily apparent the impact of what I was working on would have.

    Pros

    Great place for young engineers to start, great core values, opportunities for growth, quarterly bonuses.

    Cons

    Engineers can put in long hours during busy seasons- depending on the department 50-60 hour workweeks are not uncommon. No overtime pay for production engineers.

    Pros

    The culture at Gentex is very laidback. People are very willing to help one another without having to really hassle anyone. The opportunity for professional growth and career advancement are very good. This is a very family oriented and supportive company. Quarterly profit sharing bonuses can be pretty significant if the company is doing well.

    Cons

    The only downside is that the base salary is generally lower than the market average for most positions. Quarterly bonuses help to bridge this gap but they are not guaranteed.

    Pros

    Great amenities and environment and a lot of good people to work with. Overall it is a nice place to work.

    Cons

    The pay here is not the best. As long as the company is doing really well then profit sharing bonuses can help to alleviate this to some extent.

    Pros

    Friendly coworkers are driven to meet customer expectations for quality and delivery. People are treated like humans that have valuable input top the organization.

    Cons

    I am don't believe there are fundamental issue with the organization, but more issues with a few people. This is going to happen anywhere that people are involved.
