I have been working at Genzyme full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Working in rare disease, you felt close to the patient and had a real purpose to your work. Very entrepreneurial environment; people were able to move around and talented people could move up. It felt very much like working with family members (prior to the merger).

    Cons

Post merger, GENZ seemed to be going more towards a P&L type company. Many to most of the former Genzyme people left...taking a lot of the culture with them.

I worked at Genzyme as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Great summer internship program, other employees are very willing to help out and teach the interns, a lot of growth opportunities

    Cons

The lab space was very small and cramped, they should put more money into bigger and better lab areas for the employees

    Pros

Great company, good benefits, lots of growth opportunity.

    Cons

It is a large company and you can get lost in the shuffle. Even though the vacation benefits are good, it's not exactly fair that our European counterparts had double the amount of vacation time.

I have been working at Genzyme full-time for more than a year

    Pros

good location in Kendall square, beautiful building with great cafeteria etc., good benefits, tuition reimbursement, T pass and parking partially paid

    Cons

culture under sanofi is very different than Genzyme used to be. Bosses are all over the world and country making communication difficult sometimes. Big pharma atmosphere makes it easy for everyone to pass the buck and no one takes accountability for anything

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't forget about the little people. We make things run!

I worked at Genzyme full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Genzyme has good name recognition and truly cares about its patients. Consent Decree allows opportunities for skill development, but they will overwork you and you will not be compensated accordingly. Employees are dedicated to ensuring work is completed, at the expense of quality.

    Cons

-Too many managers with weak vision
-Lack of accountability on all levels
-Lack of career development and advancement opportunities
-Workaholic personality is expected, not recognized
-High turnover due to ambiguity pervading the site. This leads to junior staff making uneducated decisions
    -Unprofessional atmosphere

I have been working at Genzyme full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I believe in what the company stands for.

    Cons

The Allston Facility has had the life sucked out of it due to lack of proper leadership. Senior "leaders" are tucked away in their exclusive club, planning how to reduce headcount over the next few years, while doing a horrible job of communicating the reality of the future. They plan to consolidate the organization's structure, leading to reduced opportunities for advancement, and ultimately leading to good people wanting to leave. The engagement level at the company is terrible right now, despite a "dedicated team" trying to fix it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire real leaders and stop promoting technical experts. They are part of the reason you are under a consent decree to begin with. They have lost the trust of many at the employees in the organization.

The recognition and rewards system is very outdated, and many people cannot advance very far in the company
