I have been working at Geophysical Survey Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

It is a very comfortable and relaxed environment with a friendly atmosphere. The market is slow, diverse, and unsophisticated, thus layoffs have been uncommon in this company's 40+ year history. Turnover is also low and job security is very high. Management treats employees very well and are very approachable. Products are very high quality and reliable. Company is growing rapidly.

    Cons

The market size is growing and GSSI is riding the 'rising tide' . Many of the old timers see this financial windfall as justification to adhere to the ill-principled engineering practices and archaic technologies for which the market has historically forgiven us. We are experiencing growing pains as the organization is having difficulty scaling

    Advice to Management

Upper management does seem to recognize the need to innovate and has been doing well in this regard, despite opposition by many of the 'long timers', for whom change is uncomfortable.

    Pros

The company is quite stable and has cornered the market within the last 40 years.

    Cons

The culture of the company is as fake as plastic. It is a very caddy environment, it is almost like high school. The attitudes of the veterans make it very difficult for a newer person to be comfortable. It is hard to find someone not speaking negatively behind your back. The management does not seem receptive towards newer associates ideas, nor will they back you up on a conflict.

    Advice to Management

Advice to management. Be honest with your subordinates. Value honesty and integrity. Stop catering to the needs of one person. Favoritism is rampant here., change your culture.

    Pros

Great co-workers and managers. It is nice to work at a place where everyone knows everyone's name. The products are very interesting and it's fun to meet our customers when they travel to our facility. Good benefits, pay, and opportunities.

    Cons

Some co-workers can be loyal to a fault.

    Good benifits. Some great people.

    Cons

Not a large company so no where to move up.

    Pros

It is a very comfortable and relaxed environment with a friendly atmosphere. The market is slow, diverse, and unsophisticated, thus layoffs have been extremely uncommon in this company's 40+ year history. Turnover is also extremely low and job security is very high. In fact, its *almost* impossible to get fired here. Management treats employees very well and are very approachable. Most exempt employees are given discretion in how they contribute good ideas are encouraged. There are even a few young, talented, and ambitious employees who are going to make a difference in the organization.

    Cons

Upper management is operationally focused as they forever wait for organizational consensus on key decisions. Some of the managers and opinion leaders are quite disruptive when they are not in control. We are at the mercy of the market... there is no organizational focus or plan to create growth.

    Advice to Management

Take some risk for good ideas. Bypass people, even if difficult, who extort the organization because they control key paths. Stop asking for consensus from people who lack the perspective and competence.

GSSI is a great group of people to work with. Its like a good family with all its function and some dysfunction.

    Pros

GSSI is a good place to work with a lot of really great people to associate with. In most departments there is a lot of room to grow and take on challenges for which you will be rewarded. Pay is typically fair. They have a strong product portfolio and always some exciting things in the works.

    Cons

There are two groups of people at the company. One group sees huge potential opportunities by directing the focus of the company to remain competitive and by increasing efficiency. The president is in this group which is good. The other group feels that the way things have been done for the past several decades is the way to keep going. This can often be a point of contention between a couple entrenched managers and those who they manage. So its probably not all that different than a lot of companies.
