    I worked at Georgia-Pacific Corporation

    Pros

Solid company with rock solid balance sheet.
    Reinvests continually to remain competitive.
Philosophical belief in being a low cost producer.
    Competitive benefit package.
    MBM

    Cons

Management undervalues the personal side of human capital.
Overly bureaucratic, highly paranoid; negatively influenced by Mr. Koch's politics.
Emphasis on being low cost producer results in systematic inability to "sell" anything other than price in the marketplace.
Many managers cannot grasp and practice MBM in "real life."

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Purge the old guard.
Actively practice the guiding principles as opposed to citing them to impress others.
Push decision making down to the lowest levels (a mental model that seems to have been forgotten)

I worked at Georgia-Pacific Corporation full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Results driven, and embraces the free market. A lot of experienced and dedicated co-workers at all levels.

    Cons

"At risk" facilities often operate out of fear rather than to grow. i.e. short term decisions rather than long-term strategies. A lot of management turnover (something like 4 plant managers in the last 4 years, and almost all of the salaried managers have been at the site fewer than three years). This is, however, a function of the "at risk" label. I was able to train in multiple other locations, where there was a significantly more stable management environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure management hires are given the whole picture when offers are extended.

I worked at Georgia-Pacific Corporation full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    They still have a pension.

    Cons

No raises. You get a Christmas card with a picture of the Koch Family, some of the riches people on planet earth though. Not even with a coupon for free toilet paper.

None of the Management in my area understood MBM. The review process was supposed to be based on measurable performance and goals. They manufacture situations right before your review to set you up to fail so they can justify not giving you a raise. The review will be about interpersonal improvement. Nothing measurable or value related which is really what MBM is all about. Previous employers I had include one sentence on interpersonal skills as everyone can improve in that area but the majority of your review was about your performance (not manufactured). A GP review reads like a 5th grade girl talking about her nemesis who stole her friend or boyfriend rather than a Corporate Giant's performance review.

New ideas are frowned upon by the 20 year veterans. They are barely past the typewriter age so if you have innovative time saving ideas that involve anything past the 80s, you will be the enemy. Watch your back. They say they want new ideas but they don't. I was even told I need to do things their way. So the entrepreneurship they preach is another lie. Do as they say.

Oh, if Management makes a mistake, they will cover it up saying they were performing a risk assessment. And, if you need to elevate a problem, they give the problem right back to you or ignore you and hope it goes away.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand Value and what measurable means. There is plenty of pride all around, but the principle is called Humility. Show some and be sure the Managers lead by example with intellectual honesty. Your old timers are eating up money while having 6 weeks vacation that you could spend on Innovator's raises.

    Pros

Great location. Overall, people that have been there long-term are great.

    Cons

The MBM culture is difficult to receive and achieve especially for non-management to lower management employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give non-management and lower management employees some guidance on how to apply the MBM concepts before it applies to them.

    Pros

The best thing about GP are your coworkers. People on the whole are friendly. I'm afraid I do not have much to say which is nice about GP.

    Cons

Little to no communication with managers. When issues arise upper managers put their heads in the sand. Little to no recognition of a job well done. Raises and bonuses are non-existent with the attitude towards employees is there is the door, do not let it hit you as you go out of it. Little to no training opportunities. Favoritism is rampant.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I already tried and they did not want to listen.
