MBM - A great concept but in practice a rapidly vanishing vapor about the time you on-board!

I worked at Georgia Pacific Gypsum full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

A great recruiting process setting up great hopes - then the cool-aid quickly ferments when assigned to a remote location outside Atlanta. You are on you own and subjected to immense questioning of decisions that must be made daily - these question quickly involve your personal commitment, character, motives and dignity; something I've never encountered in 27 years of exemplary results producing Leadership positions I've held with smaller and much larger companies! MBM ???

    Cons

No raises or bonuses in 3 years even though my site produced Division and site best Safety/Quality/Service/Cost and financial results. Severe micromanagement which defies anything close to the "guiding principle" Principled Entrepreneurship. Somewhat understandable considering current significant financial losses in Gypsum but not at all good considering the total lack of common sense and logic in Atlanta!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Read the Science of Success SLOWLY put it down, then read it again 10 times. Put leaders in Atlanta that understand the business, it's people, machinery, processes and equipment - better yet the final product! Understand the facets just listed finance your ability to come work in the Pink Palace!

I worked at Georgia Pacific Gypsum full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - I like the MBM theory and it helps drive economic decision making throughout the business
    - I found senior management to be approachable
    - Talented people

    Cons

Gypsum is the red-haired step child of the GP companies. Its plant assets are not competitive and they have trouble competing in the market place with National and US Gypsum.

I was recruited for a senior manager role where I interacted routinely with top management in Gypsum. I never had a job review by my boss in the first 18 months but one day I ended up in an office with my boss and the HR Director where they let me go.

Since my departure, everyone of the management roles have turned over except their all mighty President Brent Paugh. People were fired, left or demoted at an alarming rate.

While I enjoyed my time at GP-Gypsum working with some talented people on complex busines problems, I would advise that others be cautious about the culture which is extremely cut throat.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Success starts at the top and I don't know how you can expect to win in the very competitive gypsum market place with a revolving door in middle and senior management. Frankly, I am surprised that President Brent Paugh hasn't bee replaced.

I worked at Georgia Pacific Gypsum as an intern for more than a year

    Pros

Everyone is very close (close quarters, communications, etc) due to its small setting. Its fast paced and management does a good job of keeping everyone connected and oriented. The management principles and leadership values set a good standard. I worked on some interesting projects and learned some essential skills. Gained good work experience.

    Cons

The Co-op program needs some serious work. There was little direction and because of its R&D nature, there were quite a few times where I went days without having something to do. There is little room to grow in this company because its work is so specialized.

Big focus on safety. lots of Overtime if your a good worker and you want it. 15 minute breaks every 2 hours. Vending machines in break room. Free gator aid during summer months.

    Cons

Fiberglass particles are everywhere. Management protects and rewards people who have very poor working habits as long as they Rat on their coworkers. if your relief was late you had to stay. Slow season is during the new year months. No heating or cooling.

pay attention to the employees that aren't kissing you butt, their the ones doing all the work.
