    Dedicated, but unappreciated, employees

    Disability Examiner (Current Employee)

ProsFlexible and comparatively generous leave policy. Long-term employees here are dedicated to the greater purpose of the job. Very rewarding work.

ConsCost-of-living increases / raises not received here since 2008. Once appealing benefits package increases in cost each year, and decreases in quality of choice and products. Micromanaging upper management. "At will" employment and no union - job protection is lacking.

Advice to Senior ManagementOffer telework wherever possible to offset financial hits to employees from rising benefits/insurance costs and inability to offer financial compensation. Allow "middle managers" to make decisions and perform their duties without interference and micromanagement from upper management.

15 years of State Government Employment

Disabily Hearing Officer (Current Employee) Atlanta, GA

ProsRelaxed work environment; Flexibility with work schedule; High number of paid holidays; consistent feedback (at least twice yearly) on performance

ConsLow pay; No pay increase in 5+ years; lots of office "politics"

Advice to Senior Managementyears ago, the state rewarded employees who "exceeded expectations" with a small bonus; this small gesture encouraged individuals to strive for greatness. Since this policy was removed, most folks are satisfied with mediocrity.

    Poor ill-informed management

Associate General Counsel (Current Employee) Atlanta, GA

ProsHoliday schedule, teleworking opportunities, interesting work.

ConsFrustrating management structure, little to no room for promotions. Almost all vacancies were filled from new, untrained outside staff that seasoned staff were then forced to train wasting valuable time. Is a revolving door, just as staff members become accomplished - they are either forced to leave due to management reorganization or burnout.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay more attention to staff retention and training rather than the continual reorganization and recruitment of new staff. If an organization requires so many reorganizations of staff then the problem isn't staff -- it's management!!

    Communications Aide at SPO

    Communications Aide (Former Employee)

ProsEveryone in the SPO is really nice and helpful. They want their aides/interns to succeed and have a great teamwork mentality. You get to attend the Senate Chamber every day, which is great for learning more about the legislative process (most Senate aides don't have this opportunity). It is a great introduction to government affairs- dealing with Senators, political environment, political communication etc.

ConsThe job of an aide is to make the full-timers jobs easier. This doesn't involve menial tasks, like making copies, but you don't have quite as much autonomy.
It is a temporary position and as of now, the SPO doesn't seem to need anymore full-time help.
