GRA

Graduate Research Assistant (Current Employee)
Atlanta, GA

I have been working at Georgia Tech part-time for more than a year

Prosopportunity to learn stuff; tuition waiver; GRA can count for 3 credit hours. Can combine GRA work with own thesis.

ConsReally depends on who the adviser is; stipend is not so good; for some major, you have to pay extra tuition.

Great university, not necessarily a great workplace

Graduate Assistant (Current Employee)

I have been working at Georgia Tech part-time for more than 5 years

ProsTop notch research, vast depth and breadth of opportunities, access to software and tools that are not available everywhere

ConsIt's easy to get lost in the masses, as they turn over a huge number of masters students and take in a large number of PhD students.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe amount of uncertainty right before the start of a semester in whether or not a PhD student will be funded adds unnecessary stress to the process.

Too short of a tenure to make a substantive review.

Assistant (Former Employee)
Atlanta, GA

I worked at Georgia Tech full-time for less than a year

ProsSome nice people and well known reputation.

ConsWhen hired no one had mentioned that there had not been any raises for 4 years. Cost for parking is high. I've heard still no raises yet parking costs and benefits have increased.

Consbad management of students, no rights given to grad students at all
too much about the $$$, little care to actual research worth.

Advice to Senior Managementdon't let professors run rampant with power

Great experience

Postdoctoral Fellow (Current Employee)
Atlanta, GA

I have been working at Georgia Tech full-time for more than a year

ProsNice campus, heart of downtown ATL, awesome professors, talented students all around. Expect great prospects, but also be prepared to work hard, as competition is intense.

ConsSurrounding neighbourhoods can be unsafe for students. No post-doctoral association, and some departments are not required to adhere to the NIH minimum salary scale.

Advice to Senior ManagementInstitute NIH minimum wages for bioscience related labs.

It was an interesting and exciting experience!

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Georgia Tech part-time for more than a year

ProsThe faculty were always very helpful and informative if I ever ran into any problems with my work. It was a great work environment and a wonderful learning experience.

ConsThe work was very time consuming but was always interesting. It was sometimes hard to ask questions about certain projects due to the security clearance required to know about the project.
