  1. This was a great place to work, but started to adopt too many corporate policies by the time I left.

I worked at Getco full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great place to work, awesome benefits and culture. The distribution of compensation to employees was exceedingly generous and the firm provided an excellent work life balance.

    Cons

Goals were frequently changed and there was an overall lack of focus. The bonus structure encouraged too many people to focus on short term returns instead of building successful long term lines of business.

    Pros

GETCO is full of really smart, down to earth people who all want the same things

    Cons

Operating in the gray is not for everyone. Very dynamic - environment changes all the time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get to know what the real issues are. Perecption is not always accurate

    Pros

Work with some of the best and brightest
Potential to make a lot of bonus money
    Relaxed, Google-like work environment
    Generous benefits package
    Massages on site

    Cons

New CEO brought in his own people from UBS so there has been a tremendous culture-shift going on.
Lots of uncertainty due to the Knight merger.
Communication has always been a weak point.
Compensation and work life balance - their strong suits - only really exist for traders
People's egos get in the way

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate, and encourage associates to communicate with each other
    Don't diminish the culture
Show loyalty to the Getco associates in the merger

    Pros

Great chance to work with some of the best in the business.
The employ a cost is no object, as long as it's profitable attitude.
Meritocracy - Sometimes, see cons, as sometimes the Egos take over.
Food pickup daily to keep you at your desk.

    Cons

Too many big Egos vying for quarterly bonuses greater than annual salaries, and this causes a lot of stepping on toes.
    Long hours expected.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    None, Keep on Chugging

I have been working at Getco full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Work with great people. Great pay. Great benefits.

    Cons

Pressure to work long hours can disrupt work/life balance. Bonuses vary widely between people doing the same function. PnL is drying up and the environment is becoming political. Almost entirely new senior management in last 12 months. Passive agressive environment where you some seldom get direct feedback.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company is too big and complex now for hands-off managing. Don't be afraid to manage. Hiring really smart people doesn't mean they don't need to be managed.

I worked at Getco full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

You have the opportunity to work with many smart and interesting people. The pay was decent for the industry historically, not sure if this is still true.

    Cons

Getco was successful in a very narrow range of trades and failed continuously to adapt and diversify their strategies. This was due to massively incompetent leadership. With the new CEO, it is hard to say what the future holds, but so far it does not look good.
