    Pros

Good location in heart of Chicago, uses Revit for most projects. Some diamonds in the rough (good and smart employees) who continue to work there.

    Cons

No professional growth, low pay and dismal annual raises even for high performers, does not pay OT or reward hard work with sufficient bonuses (taboo to ask if you can expect raises or bonus - execs just laugh and joke), low retention rate, lot of politics, bland white office, low morale, company does not trust its employees, below average benefits (do not get Friday after Thanksgiving off).

    Advice to Management

Trust your employees. Reward your hardworking employees if you really want to retain them.

    Pros

After the recession, Ghafari diversified their client portfolio. The company as a whole has a very professional environment, with most things being kept clean, neat and looking professional. The IT staff does a great job at keeping the company running, and most hardware and software is kept current. General comradery among peers is very good. The company does make a good effort of company picnics and yearly parties. Because of the diverse client base, Ghafari Associates LLC is a great place to network to find your next job. I experienced a modest effort at a work-life balance.

    Cons

After 10 years at he company I can tell you there is an absolute ZERO chance of advancement (unless your name is Ghafari). Ghafari Associates, LLC does not promote from within, and it seems to pain them to offer any form of employee development or training. While Ghafari Associates, LLC does have a diverse and established client base, and that may offer job security, Ghafari Associates, LLC does not pride itself with employee retention or efforts of merit increases, raises, or cost of living increases. Management's overall attitude is the employee should be lucky they have a job. Ghafari Associates, LLC's corporate counsel & management frequently flexes the "Privately Held Company" muscle and "at will" employment laws. Ghafari Associates LLC appears to depend on new college grads and out-of-state transfers to keep itself gainfully staffed, and employee turnover to keep salary creep at bay. Overall, if you're looking for a paycheck until you find something else, Ghafari Associates LLC is your next employer.

    Advice to Management

My advice to management is stop referring to Ghafari as a "big family". It's not. The Ghafari family is small and very evident, and unless you're in it you have no security or chance for advancement. Increase efforts to train employees, then try to keep them at Ghafari. I'm sure the investment will pay off. Let the few shining stars that are there become assets.

    Pros

    Great view of the lake?

    Cons

You basically work 40+ hours with minimal chances of raises. All budget issues gets transferred to the workers and in the end that means bonus and raises are scarce.

    Advice to Management

Nothing, cause it just doesn't work here

    Pros

Reasonable work schedule and good pay. The job was not too difficult and there was plenty of work to do at the begging.

    Cons

With the corporate headquarters being in another state, it was sometimes difficult to get in touch and understand what was going on.

    Advice to Management

    Communication is Key

    Pros

*Clean offices *Nice staff (not management) *You get to work on large projects

    Cons

It would be hard to mention them all, but here are a few just to give you an idea * The company is run by Mrs Scrooge, she expects you to give her all your time but wants to give as little as possible back. More employee benefits are lost year after year, yet company profits keep increasing. * No overtime, expect to work long days and weekends with no additional pay - if you don't like it, you are disposable and they will try to find someone else to do the job. *People in charge are mostly family and close friends, expect blood to rule over competence * You will find a lot of young people working in both Dearborn and Chicago offices, that might sound positive but it isn't. Most people that can find another job and get out of there do that as soon as they can; hence the main reason for all the job openings. * Don't expect to advance in salary or position, make sure you negotiate a good salary first if you can, cause you will not get any significant raises *The bonuses they promise and 401k matches sound very good on paper, in reality they will never exceed 1-3% of your total salary. *Management is out of touch with employees. They seem to be surprised when good hard working employees want to leave and also why no one is applying. *Management takes erratic reactive decisions, the only calculated decisions involve how much they pay employees *They have the least amount of holidays possible. Most companies for instance will give the day after thanksgiving off, Ghafari will force you to take it as PTO (your vacation time). 1 day off for Christmas, non for Easter. Moreover, you cannot accumulate a lot of vacation time, you use if they even let you do that them or lose them (often the case).

    Advice to Management

Get someone else to run the company, you are not fit for the job.

    Pros

Always work to be done, lots of different avenues for revenue so lots of job security. Very friendly work environment.

    Cons

Only 6 paid holidays and compensation can be low. Also, they can be very strict on HR issues, taking the fun out of the office.

    Advice to Management

Give larger raises and bonuses if you wish to keep happy employees

    Pros

High profile projects that will boost your resume Very multicultural and open minded modern work environment that suits well with it's Downtown location. Good place to work for women engineers and architects (Almost half of the staff are women, which is a good thing)

    Cons

Some managers are terrible with managing and people skills Micromanaging is big in the Engineering side Very political with leadership, managing and negotiations. All full time employees are salaried and no overtime. You will be asked to work overtime and on weekends but without pay. There won't be much growth for young engineers. You will report to your manager and that's it. Most of the Architects are young and their attitude and culture is not so professional since they don't have any strong senior manager to teach professionalism. 'Gossip' is the favorite word in this office. You will find rumors, gossips and back stabbing by the higher management itself.

    Advice to Management

Try to make the work culture more professional. Don't think of yourself as royalty and the employees are people you are ruling. This office needs everyone is equal attitude. Let it be CEO or low end employee, everyone is contributing to the same company.
