    Pros

I love my department manager as well as the store owner and store manager. Very flexible as well as good pay..(if you get enough hours) They are flexible and understanding with late's and call-offs. i don't know if that was just my department or the whole store. i earned a weeks paid vacation in just 90 days. They also have opportunities for benefits which i haven't needed. i also love the 10 percent off giant eagle brand products that comes with being an employee! Getting paid weekly also helps alot.

    Cons

There is little room to grow and advance in my department. (file maintenance) The other departments managers and my fellow co workers are mostly young women, enough said. ALOT of petty drama but nothing that cant be taken care of.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would really look into giving more hours to stores to give the employees.

    Pros

The company is unionized, so the employees have some protection; scheduling time off usually works well if you have enough notice; employees are generally nice; paid vacation after a year

    Cons

Can't maintain a healthy work-life balance with the hours and pay of minimum wage; upper management is not always friendly; getting time off and getting hours is based on seniority so if you're not planning to stay very long I would not recommend working here

    Pros

10% discount on giant eagle brands

benefits are through the union so they are decent, but you have to pay into the union for 13 MONTHS before you get anything

    Cons

management plays favorites, you can't get a full-time position unless you're a manager, even if you do get one, anyone hired after 1996 is subject to have their hours cut at any given time for any reason.

they hired SO MANY awful people from Tops!! the majority of store managers are from Tops and there's a reason that chain failed.

If you're not friends or family of management, good luck going anywhere!

They need to STOP thinking only about profits...the WORST thing about a "family-owned" empire like this is that all they care about is money in their pockets! Stop giving bonuses to overpaid store managers and then taking them away from already underpaid department managers!!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees--they know what they're talking about.

Treat employees with respect and you'll receive the same back.

    Pros

If you are a college student its good if you want part time.

    Cons

Dont expect to gain anything here because you can put everything into your work and you dont get anywhere. It seems that the long timers are the ones who get what they want. They want to cut hours and alot of good people are leaving because of it.Too much favoritism.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Check on your department managers and make sure they are being a boss and not contributing to work place drama.Look at your good employees and take care of them.

    Pros

Mostly a friendly work environment. I am 21 years old and i work with people my age. The company works around your availability very well. I am a college student and can only work certain hours and they give me a good amount of hours. Pay is not bad either for just being a cashier or cart pusher.

    Cons

As what you would expect sometimes customers could be rude. Wish we had our own baggers, this would make ringing register a little less stressful.

    Pros

if you like working hard and the public this is a great place, You can go far in this company if you want and strive. It has benefit,s you can go to college on Giant eagle and help yourself move up in the company.. They also have a union and pay competitive wages. It pays in the long run if you can get vested in this company.

    Cons

The bad thing is you may struggle if you are not full time. and need to have hours. You have to get use to shift changes during a week day turn afternoon back to am shift all in one week. You must be able to deal with the public at hand.

Good job for high school students, or lifers with the company.

    Pros

The employees are all really nice. I never had a problems with any of the workers. Employees are given a lot of incentives to do well, such as gift cards, and there is a yearly opportunity to tell the company how you feel. The company tries to promote a team feeling by doing numerous group competitive activities that you can sign up for, and there is a Christmas party. They're really flexible as far as scheduling, and it's a union job so the worker does have someone to turn to if they feel they're having problems with the company. As a cashier, all you do is stand in one spot all day and move items across the belt, so it's an easy job. You are also given paid breaks. As union job, the least amount of hours you can be scheduled per week is 14 hours.

    Cons

Even though it's an easy job, it's extremely monotonous. If you like doing something different at work on a regular basis, this job is not for you. The breaks are paid but they're only 15 minutes long (for every 6+) hours. Since the stores employ so many people, it can be very hard to get the number of hours you want. It's almost impossible to get a lot of hours without being with the company for 10, 15+ years. If you're concerned about hours, I would recommend getting a second part time job. Giant Eagle employs a lot of high school students, so the atmosphere can be young and immature. The biggest downside is simply dealing with the customers. They can be rude and mean for no reason. You only have a career with the company is you plan on staying and retiring with them. There is no room to move up within a few years of being employed. As a union job, an employee is not eligible for benefits until have after one year of being employed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Enforce rules with young employees. I saw high school students/young college students not working too many times and talking with their fellow friend workers instead. If your job is to bag, then you should bag for everyone, not just your friends.
