I have been working at Giant Food full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

You work in a Covered area & a Temperature controlled place.

    Cons

The newer Giant ...... Low wages , less help, No Full time unless you go into Management. Goes by seniority so when you start you will get about 12-16 hours a week & that will be nights & weekends.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your Employees. They are the ones who have to hear the Customers talk whether it's Complaining or Complimenting, Regardless they are the ones Paying our Bills.

If you do not want management, you will only get 16 hours. No health benefits for first five years for part time employees. Pay not as good as it used to be.

I have been working at Giant Food part-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Family oriented work environmemt. Very good pay and annual raises. Great benefits for part timers and full timers. Paid holidays, plenty of room to move up within the company. Each employee can make their own decision to make the customer happy without the need to get a manager. Very clean work environment and you actually get an employee discount.

    Cons

Very busy supermarket chain. Not enough hours given to hire enough people. Can be very stressful at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give more hours and staffers. Your customer base is used to the days when they would get instant satisfaction from Giant. They still know of us as having the best customer service and having well staffed stores.. but its getting harder and harder to keep that expectation a reality!

I worked at Giant Food full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Clean work environment. Good IT help desk support. Little down time for computer problems. Paid weekly. Coverage for personal holidays, vacation and sick days by scheduler.

    Cons

Insufficient payroll staffing hours to meet patients needs .Ever increasing administrative demands. No company sponsored continuing education. No mentorship program for new grad hires. Transfers done with little notice. It's Thursday, start your new store Monday. Few meaningful reviews or job performance appraisals. Upper management who identify problems but offer few practical solutions. Corporate management from out of state truly unfamiliar with the "culture" or needs regionally. Overworked, over burdened district managers whose attitudes filter down to store management. Strategically and historically takes a lag-lag approach to employee raises. No mentorship program for support help-technicians. No scheduled lunch or dinner break.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend a 8 hour shift in a store, routinely, not a hour or two and identify the problems your employees face daily first hand. Mandatory assignment of all district managers to work as a pharmacist in a store two days per month. Increase the pay of technicians so pharmacists can attract, hire and retain good people. They are our lifeline but have little chance of upward mobility within the pharmacy department. Create a new job category-"Senior technician" who has experience and takes charge of administrative duties within the pharmacy , lifting the burden of paperwork and endless lists of "non professional" projects overburdening the pharmacist. Show some appreciation and smile when you visit your stores. President of company and entourage came to see store and walked by the department without so much as a wave or handshake. Enroll all management in classes teaching "people" skills.
