I worked at Giant Food Stores part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible scheduling for the most part. Medical benefits for part time employees after one year, prescription, dental, and vision available after two years. I loved working there and the benefits were excellent, especially for a part time employee. There are definitely plenty opportunities available to those willing and eager to learn. I started out as a cashier working no more than 20 hours per week and progressed to working behind the customer service desk, to learning cash office/store accounting procedures, to an HBC lead backup, to receiver, with a splash of pricing mixed in all in the course of three years. I also worked in the dairy and produce and grocery departments when needed. The more you learn, the more valuable you are to the company, just not quite valuable enough to be paid a decent wage.

    Cons

After 3 years of working 50+ hours a week (every week, not just every once in a while) I was only ever considered a part-time employee due to the fact that there were only a certain amount of full-time "slots" allowed per store. With the part-time designation also came the part-time payscale.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your employees what they're worth. You will continue to lose quality employees such as myself if you don't.

I have been working at Giant Food Stores part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexibility with changes in availability. Very friendly atmosphere, happy associates. I made a lot of friends there, both associates and customers. Pay raises every 6 months, and COLA adjustments after that. Was able to also do an internship with Giant--they don't advertise it to associates, but it is on their website so it's good to check.

    Cons

Management was not supportive of me as a checkout coach. Opportunities for full-time employment were few and far between.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We are a team--please treat associates like teammates, not obstacles. Also, the store needs more cross-training.

I worked at Giant Food Stores part-time

    Pros

I worked at Giant Food Stores part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Consistent part-time hours. Easy work. Decent pay with raises every 6 months. No pressure from management. Cant really go wrong

    Cons

Sometimes management was too leanient towards shift supervisors, and depending in your shift supervisor you might end up hating the job because if how lazy they are. And the hours vary per department per store. I averaged 30 hours a week which was great but my friend in produce averaged 12 hours a week....he was a good employee too. The supervisor in his department just for some reason liked having alot of employees with low hours, and mine liked having their employees make money. Which is great for me but b.s. for others.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be tougher on your department supervisors they dont know much.
