I have been working at Giant Food Stores

    Pros

extra pay on sundays, work with some nice, friendly people, flexible schedule, little coworker drama

    Cons

busy holidays, rude customers, getting customers to donate, running out of supplies

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some salary increases after working with the company for a decent amount of time would be great! Also make sure we always have enough supplies-plastic and paper bags.

I have been working at Giant Food Stores part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Paid weekly, easy job, enjoy coworkers

    Cons

Pay is pathetic, management could work on their people skills. Groceries are over priced except forsale items so Icant shop there

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't harass people when they call off sick. It is not a negotiation, and in the company training it mentions several times do not come in to work if your sick to avoid contamination. store manager should watch the same training.

I have been working at Giant Food Stores

    Pros

For a Supermarket-they are pretty good for long-time associates, if you are part time or a newer full timer-the benefits are still okay, but not as good-older associates are "grandfathered" is several policys that are beneficial to us long termers, but I'm not sure it's entirely fair to newer hires.

    Cons

Work/Life balance. I am a department manager and under our new initiative "Thunder", we are to be more friendly with customers, have better prices and better selection. Well, what is actually happening is that the higher ups have introduced several very good programs but are failing to support them with the labor dollars they need to be successful.

James McCann might have a very good idea with Thunder....but he has to loosen up the purse strings to ensure us folks at store level can implement his vision. The problem with our company is that the corporate office probably is full of folks covering their buttholes and being "yes men/woman.

Here's a tip Mr. McCann, come visit a few stores by yourself at different times of the day and night. Don't dress up in a suit and tie, just wear casual clothes. You aren't going to like what you see. I'm sure you've been in several of our higher end competitors stores? I'm betting most of our competitors spend more money on labor and actually care about their employees instead of trying to work them to death to hit an unrealistic labor percentage.

I'm glad I have less then 10 years left until retire.....I just hope I can survive it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pull your heads out of your rear ends.....do completely unannounced store visits to get the real picture of what our stores look like.

I worked at Giant Food Stores full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

with a store being open 24/7 the hours can be flexible

    Cons

co-workers are hit or miss, management is also hit or miss and it changed often, pay is not the best, but there are some good benefits if you can get full time though it is difficult to get full time, when going for promotions they do not pick best qualified but who they want for the position, some work hard and others do not but they hardly if ever face any kind of discipline or consequences for that if they are a favorite

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

fair isn't equal and equal isn't necessarily fair, do something to show your employees (most especially the part timers) that they are appreciated (you cannot run the store without them)

I worked at Giant Food Stores

    Pros

Not hard work, work-life balance is a plus.

    Cons

Some co-workers are hard to get a long with; lots of egos.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management does not discipline those whom are not working as hard as others. Tend to play favorites.
