Former Employee - Sales and Events Intern

    Pros

Flexible schedule, you can leave when you are finished with your work, awesome discounts on the Gilt sites, you can attend the events after you set them up

    Cons

Seems like they have interns doing a lot of busy work. Rarely did I ever see the research I did turn into anything else. Wasn't a huge help with getting a job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more direction and use interns as valuable resources. We are there to work so take advantage of it.

Current Employee - Customer Support  in  Portland, OR
Current Employee - Customer Support in Portland, OR

    Pros

Nice people... good employee discount. Decent stipend for full-time employees.

    Cons

Distinct changes occurred with frequency, but CS was the last to hear about it; even though CS is the first contact with the customer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand and absorb the concept of transparency. You are becoming increasingly corporate in the roboticism of your operations, your lowest employees (CS) arguably feel it hardest. In the Portland office, our direct managers didnt even know what was going on; beyond the obvious posturing that eventually led to your closing the Portland office on May 15th.

Nobody will have a willingness to "live and breathe" Gilt, the more you reduce employees' experiences to a cog-like replaceability.

    Pros

The people you meet here are great & you will learn a lot. It seems that experiences and opinions vary depending on the department you work for. Overall, a good experience. The company has nothing but good intentions - it just has become more corporate and less about the individuals.

    Cons

The company has changed a lot recently. In general things move very fast at Gilt - which can be frustrating when things are just done to be done and without much thought.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to HR & to your employees.

Current Employee - Anonymous Employee in New York, NY

    Pros

Decent pay, smart co-workers, good challenges

    Cons

Very obvious issues brought up many times in surveys throughout the company, very slow to actually address: management needs to decide on a specific direction and actually strive for it. Lack of room for advancement. Probably because of teams being cut back instead of growing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take opinions from surveys seriously. Provide a better opportunity for advancement.

A lot of good and potential struggling under lack of vision

Former Employee - Director  in  New York, NY
Former Employee - Director in New York, NY

    Pros

The company has a great start-up, entrepreneurial energy which is inspiring and invariably forces you to learn and adapt quickly. The name alone is great for the resume and provides a crash course on all things e-commerce. Good employee discounts and good pay which inevitably went back to company when shopping.

    Cons

Very little to no structure or vision. There is a stated matrix-like structure but in reality it almost feels like a fend for yourself structure. Senior management was often absent but there when things went really wrong, often much after the fact. Hard to develop long-range plans, goals when there was very little agreement or direction. At the end of the day it made the work difficult as you were always managing fire-drills as opposed to building something. Culture did not promote any work-life balance (in name only) which is fine if you're under 30. The organization as a whole has a lot of smart people but more people who think they are very smart and ultimately it created a delusional sense of greatness with little innovation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend more time in the office, craft a clear vision/direction and reward innovation (even failed) and hire non traditionally to inspire creativity and mentor junior staff.

Current Employee - Software Engineer  in  New York, NY
Current Employee - Software Engineer in New York, NY

    Pros

The people are amazing and there are a lot of interesting projects to work on. From an engineering point of view, it is open to new ideas and you get to learn very quickly about fashionable new technologies.

    Cons

Career development has not quite been thought through in a meaningful way. While there would be Director and VP openings once in a while, upper management usually hires from outside.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on developing talent and leadership from the people you already have. A lot want a bigger role in the company and are forced to find this elsewhere.

    Pros

Intelligent peers, and demanding of excellence. Great experience.

    Cons

The job takes over your life, in reality and on social media. Otherwise it very much depends what division you work for. Not diverse.
