I worked at Glacier Water Services full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Unlimited overtime, benefits, management, flexible hours, work truck

    Cons

Corporate is horrible, pay is low, big brother mentality, illegal modification of time sheet

Local management is decent, they actually have a brain and can make good decisions. Corporate in Vista California has their head on backwards. They come down from California and preach like they understand you and appreciate you. Then go back to California to drive their BMW home to their nice house, all while your making 12-13$ an hour.
When you finally get a raise, if you beg and your performance is excellent, you will be lucky to get 50 cents, but will likely get an even lower raise. Politics. Pay is entirely controlled by corporate.

This is a skilled trade, requires knowledge and a good mechanical understanding to do the job efficiently. So given the low pay, they end up hiring people straight off the street, with zero experience to do the job. Which is fine, if the person did not consider McDonald's a career before coming to glacier.

Turnover is bad. I would expect the turnover here to be normal for a Walmart type environment. Some get fired, some quit. Most quit because of pay. Some quit because of the gestapo like corporate. They will watch you, how long you were at a certain place, when you left there etc. They will watch your speed. THEY WILL CHANGE YOUR TIME SHEET BASED ON WHAT TIME YOUR TRUCK STARTS. THEY WILL NOT PAY YOU FOR WORKING THROUGH LUNCH. They will deduct time from your sheet to cover their butts in a legal perspective. All of this is illegal.

If you have to work at home for an hour or so, you will either not get paid, be questioned about it, up to being fired. Management knows how the job works, they know you have to do things at home sometimes, but the second you get on their bad side, they will find the ammunition to fire you.

Their installers are allowed to work, doing plumbing, without either a plumbing license, nor a water treatment license, The service technicians the same. Plumbing code does not exist to glacier water, which puts the health and safety of the water in those machines at risk.

Overall, this is a wonderful temporary job. In the long run, you will not make any money. You want to work somewhere 20 years and top out at 19.00/hr this place is for you. If your fine with oversight(lack of trust), having your time sheet illegally changed, and working a minimum of 55 hours a week. This place is for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Advice to corporate. Pay people more, quit treating ever employee as if their a cheating spouse, quit illegally modifying time sheets, reduce work hours

    Be aware of Administrative Cliques

I have been working at Glacier Water Services full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    No micro-management
Technicians are really nice on the phones
Practically sit here all day, doing nothing
You can go to the restrooms whenever you want
Some job security if you've proven you can do your work quickly and efficiently

    Cons

The biggest con of working in the corporate office is the fact that there is one clique that rules all. If one person of this particular clique does not like you, the others automatically do not like you. This wouldn't be a problem if this clique did not consist of leads, managers, and HR personnel that have control of your employment status. In addition, the fact that most people are highly uneducated within the operations department makes for an extremely immature atmosphere.
Benefits are terrible. Within the first year employees only receive 1.3 hours of vacation per pay period. After 1 year employees are given 2.6 and after 5 years it goes up to a whopping 4.5. Good luck finding relaxation. Health insurance is cheap, might as well pay healthcare services out of pocket. Bonuses? How about a $50 Visa card once a year, in December.
Corporate employees get paid minimally to increase wages for executives.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire new managers. Old does not always mean experienced. Most managers are not respected here. Let the VP of HR go also, because she is the one allowing such careless behavior of managers.

I have been working at Glacier Water Services full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Take home company vehicle, fuel card, no time clock, my supervisor is the best boss I have ever had.

    Cons

On call 24 hours a day. The pay stinks. Only allowed to drive truck for daily route and service calls. Managers above district managers don't listen and have no clue what it takes to be a service tech. Corporate has no idea how bad the Division managers treat the managers and techs below them.
90% of service calls you never find a problem. 5% of service calls are coin jam customer related. The other 5%.... well you know........

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your techs. Stop blaming the techs for problems that your Managers are creating. Make Division Managers accountable!
