I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline

    Pros

Benefits are good. Money is decent.

    Cons

Company values are laudable. They want to be the most trusted pharmaceutical company in the industry. However they have created a toxic culture. Sales people are paid on how well they score on tests and other metics, such as the number of doctors they call on, the percentage of samples they give out and the number of targeted providers they get to programs/meetings. The whole field is cheating because they are scared. They routinely pass around tests; lying (inflating) the number calls made; getting doctors to sign for samples and throwing them away and running telecons that no one listens to. Reps are also subjectively rated by managers. They say the rating scale is not subjective, but it most certainly is. Integrity, honesty & respect, three of the GSK's pillars have never been so compromised. Cheating is happening. Senior management knows it. The just "turn a blind eye" to it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Tell people what questions they got wrong on tests and why. That way we will learn from our mistakes. Be transparent (4th GSK pillar) about it. Also, stop making us enter calls in e-samples; 360 and on a tracker. It's a hugely wasteful use of time to do things in triplicate. -- there have been so much downsizing that there is no path for promotion. Most think a second round of layoffs are coming in the fall.

I worked at GlaxoSmithKline full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good Work-life balance. Good salary and benefits, including bonus opportunity. People are nice and supportive for the most part.

    Cons

Weak culture. Morale is low driven by too many restructures and layoffs. Opportunities to grow are limited as there are very few higher level jobs. The structure has become very flat after restructuring. It sometimes feels like a cold company without a soul.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay more attention to your people which is your most important asset.
