    Pros

Excellent benefits, good vacation, pension, bonus

    Cons

Managers do not go through any kind of training, performance reviews are unfair due to GSK requiring managers to pick a certain number of employees to fill the required "fail" slots.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not play favorites. Be fair.

I worked at GlaxoSmithKline full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits are good. Training is top-notch and ranks at top Pharma companies. Sales training is very good and gives employees new to sales an excellent roadmap to follow. Work life balance is great if you are an efficient worker.

    Cons

It is very hard to get noticed in a company that is this large. Your are dependent on your manager. Managers are trained to be "Box-checkers" and will grade as such. This is challenging because a true sales person knows that you cannot follow a script exactly every single time which is what a lot of managers require.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your reps. While sales are obviously important, rolling it up into "Best Practices" and expecting everyone to sell in an extremely similar fashion is doing your sales teams a dis-service. Make sure that your employees know that they are not just a number.

I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

There are some great, experienced and knowledgeable people working within the organisation however...

    Cons

Management is sadly lacking and nepotism and favouritism are very apparent. If you go out drinking with the boss and you challenge the the boss (despite the 'Speak Up' policy), you'll go far. Knowledge is power' and the hierarchical structure controls the flow of information ... Both ways.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sort out the middle/junior management in the business. There are some inappropriate behaviours being exhibited by staff at this level and the upper management in the business are blissfully unaware.
Get out into the shop floor, talk to the people at the grass roots who are the 'do-ers' to find out what's really going on. Really talk to them. Stop relying on the upward comms coming from your reports who suppress the issues and don't communicate what's really going on. And actually do something about the results from the staff questionnaires.
