I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Pay and benefits are nice, especially once you get to a manager level. Good flexibility and opportunity to move around. Nice vacation and holiday schedules.

    Cons

Company increasingly outsources more functions, without reliably measuring whether it is effective or efficient. Long term lack of IT investment means most systems are antiquated and don't work well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let your staff show what they can do rather than assuming BPO providers are automatically better.

Provide a way to feedback anonymously on leaders to weed out the tyrants.

I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

GSK is a great company to work for overall. It is commonplace to work with individuals from across the world, which is a very enlightening experience. GSK does care about patients and performs a lot of work dedicated to charitable notions.

    Cons

It takes forever to get anything done with the bureaucracy and political climate. This causes frustration as a lot of hard work goes to waste when it takes so long for decisions to be made. Everything is about savings money right now, and the focus is on tactical decisions, not strategic ones.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Empowerment in the organisation has been driven to a new low. There should be more recognition of successes and the hard work being done by employees. Leadership should stop and reflect more on the short-term decisions being made and how they are impacting the strategic value and perception of employees

I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexible work hours, good benefits, average compensation, on-site fitness center, easy access to benefit management site and performance review site, good resources for on-job training.

    Cons

Work environment is getting intense and less friendly recent years. Too many people work on administration jobs. The performance review process is getting weird. Frequent reorganization.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There have been so many reorganization. Not sure if the company is in the right direction.

    Pros

The benefits are extraordinary and the people I worked with were generally competent and nice but in such a big company, you do find people who seem to stick around because they are better at politics than performance.

    Cons

The complexity of the organization - you have to go through a lot of hoops to get things done

I worked at GlaxoSmithKline full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Decent pay for our area

    Cons

Management couldn't plan anything. During the summer there wasn't enough work, many weeks we didn't get 40 hrs and had to take vacation. In the fall and winter we worked 6 and 7 days a week, 12hr shifts. Pay raises were almost nothing and were not based on performance, just a flat rate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get your act together. There is a reason they have been trying to sell the site.
