I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline

    Pros

The most amazing people work for GSK.

    Cons

GSK has to restructure. It's sad.

I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Salaries are top-notch in my area and the benefits are great too. They take good care of their employees. There are programs to reward good work. There are also program to try out new areas of the company so you become well rounded.

    Cons

The management is abysmal from top to bottom. Too many chiefs, not enough indians. Constant reorganization (threats of layoffs, changing priorities, etc). Travel to conferences has been chopped. No capital budget for up to date instrumentation. Seems like each quarter we're selling assets to ensure shareholders are paid first.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a long term look rather than figuring out how to meet EPS quarter to quarter.

I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline

    Pros

    Top notch colleagues.
Good benefits (previously were much better) and still better than other industries.
Opportunities for advancement or learning other parts of the organization.

    Cons

Too system heavy (numerous systems that aren't efficient, tracking too many variables, and although data is there and easily visible, managers who cull it can't understand what they are looking at therefore there are other systems to explain information).
Too many managers who don't materially contribute work and value and not enough people to produce real output.
Too many silos and not enough team work with focus and understanding of other groups.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In all things, simpler is better. The company cultural tenets are good but much of it appears to be "lip service." The scientists are top notch but the executives and non-R&D employees need to be better behaved and follow laws and ethics.

I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

enjoyed my years working for GSK. unfortunately they are closing R&D here in RTP.

    Cons

preference of those in PA and UK over those in RTP. hence the closing of RTP R&D site.

    I worked at GlaxoSmithKline

    Pros

Salary, Benefits, Very smart and talented people work there.

    Cons

Very little HR presence so no one to go to if there is a problem. If you try to report concerns or issues (including compliance issues) then you experience retaliation from management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of nepotism - hire people based on merits not on who they know. Hire from within. Listen to your mid and low level employees.

I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline

    Pros

Good pay, plenty of vacation time with company shutdown over Christmas, good people generally, interesting science and projects

    Cons

Over 15 years my department has undergone repeated painful layoffs as the company tries to grow profits by decreasing costs. much more work is now done on contract and R&D done by acquisitions rather than internal research. Even after a record year of new approvals (6) in 2014 we are undergoing another huge layoff (RTP site is stopping all R&D). Unclear when this will stop.

I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    +Excellent pay and benefits
+Flexible work hours (though varies based on job and boss)
+Stimulating projects (nothing is ever routine)
+Good budgets for great equipment (up until 10 years ago)

    Cons

    -RTP site being shutdown
-For 25+ years before shutdown, had endless counterproductive reorganizations that crushed productivity and caused confusion
-For 25+ years before shutdown, had endless management 'initiatives' that never achieved anything and were usually abandoned before getting to the implementation phase
-For 10+ years before shutdown, had layoffs about every 1.5 years with most experienced/best scientists getting cut
-For 10+ years before shutdown had minimal chances for meaningful promotions
-Complete disconnect between 'talking about quality' and actual timelines & resources allocated for developing projects
-Most equipment not upgraded or replaced in over 10 years
-Now outsourcing EVERYTHING with resulting increased management burden and decreased quality
-Moving R&D to China has been major fiasco

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Should have closed RTP or Philly site 10 years ago after the GW-SKB merger, rather than have the 'slow death' that was going on at RTP which is only now reaching its final stage
-STOP the endless reorganizations - these do nothing but increase workload and confusion
-May as well close Philly site too, since we know GSK is retreating to the UK
