I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Excellent benefits
Vacation and time-off policy is generous and fair
People are very professional and easy to get along with

    Cons

Matrix organization can be frustrating--no one is able to make a binding decision.
Financial decisions the company's leadership makes are not transparent (or not logical, depending on your view).
As cutbacks have happened, the people left are asked to do more and more, to the point of overwork.
    Cutbacks have limited career growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pump money into sales. Glaxo, Inc., used to be the best sales organization in the industry. Get the excitement back!

I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Salaries are top-notch in my area and the benefits are great too. They take good care of their employees. There are programs to reward good work. There are also program to try out new areas of the company so you become well rounded.

    Cons

The management is abysmal from top to bottom. Too many chiefs, not enough indians. Constant reorganization (threats of layoffs, changing priorities, etc). Travel to conferences has been chopped. No capital budget for up to date instrumentation. Seems like each quarter we're selling assets to ensure shareholders are paid first.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a long term look rather than figuring out how to meet EPS quarter to quarter.

I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline

    Pros

    Top notch colleagues.
Good benefits (previously were much better) and still better than other industries.
Opportunities for advancement or learning other parts of the organization.

    Cons

Too system heavy (numerous systems that aren't efficient, tracking too many variables, and although data is there and easily visible, managers who cull it can't understand what they are looking at therefore there are other systems to explain information).
Too many managers who don't materially contribute work and value and not enough people to produce real output.
Too many silos and not enough team work with focus and understanding of other groups.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In all things, simpler is better. The company cultural tenets are good but much of it appears to be "lip service." The scientists are top notch but the executives and non-R&D employees need to be better behaved and follow laws and ethics.

I like the place to work. New projects. Challenging work.

    Cons

A bit relaxed environment which kind of loses the sight of project

I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline

    Pros

    In its current environment, none

    Cons

District Managers are given too much power over sales force. Often reps are not measured by true performance and instead your subject to a game of popularity. Used to be a great company to work for but now bonus structure is at an all time low, perpetual lay offs, demotivated sales force, and the employees from the top down are jumping ships

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

None, they are truly not interested - they are only interested in saving their own necks
