great place to work

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Goldman Sachs

Pros- working with the smartest and most driven people
- entire organization works as a team
- always striving for perfection

Cons- some complacency creeping in because of market position
- foster more individual creativity and thoughts
- think about the long term business vs short term quarterly results

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to strive for excellence and not allow complacency to set in, especially in the "middle" levels of the organization, especially the VPs. Senior management is always hungry and creative, incoming hires are generally brilliant and aggressive. Need to fix the missing link.

It was OK

Technology Analyst (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at Goldman Sachs

ProsSalary and bonuses were relatively good for a tech job. The GS name carries a certain amount of prestige among other people.

ConsClassic Office Space environment. Lots of red tape seems to almost try to prevent you from doing your job. There are never enough resources to do a good job of anything.

Advice to Senior ManagementFigure out how to stop hiring BS artists and dead weight. Stop trying to offshore help desk operations and things like that.

Good place to work; but choose the right group and esp. the manager

Senior Programmer Analyst (Former Employee)

I worked at Goldman Sachs

Prostalented people to work with, opportunities to enhance business knowledge and technology; good pay and bonus

Consstressful work culture; office politics; you can get unnoticed if you are not a "yes" man to your boss (again depends on the group and the manager);

Advice to Senior ManagementTo managers who don't treat employees fairly - please change your attitude

Good place to work, depending on your lifestyle needs.

Finance Analyst (Current Employee)

I have been working at Goldman Sachs

ProsGood benefits, vacation days.
Emphasis on business principles, work ethics, diversity etc..

ConsLong hours. For certain people, salary may not compensate you enough for time lost with friends, family.
Promotion process is not straightforward and decision may involve people who never worked with you.
Most of Finance has moved to Jersey City.
Lost many talented people during the year due to the lack of compensation (which is understandable), understaffing (much more work for those who remained).

Advice to Senior ManagementGreat management team.

great place to work, grow

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Goldman Sachs

Prosgreat emphasis on teamwork and leadership, just as advertised/talked about, great environment ie no cutthroat behavior as heard of at other firms

Consbad working conditions re hours, lifestyle but nothing that is unheard of at any other finance firm as well - prestige and exit opportunities more than compensate for this necesary evil

Advice to Senior Managementinvolve junior staff in execution more - delegation would probably make the leadership model more cohesive - otherwise, much better rapport between srs and jrs than at other firms

$80,000 Base

Operations Technical Specialist (Former Employee)
Jersey City, NJ

I worked at Goldman Sachs

ProsIncredible talent and senior management staff. High visibility and exposure to senior management including daily involvement on high-risk issues and both tactical and strategic initiatives. Communication, escalation of risks and issues, and follow-up/turnaround time are themes that are practiced and executed on a daily and consistent basis.

ConsRequires more work and effort to standout out amongst peers and provide a better business case for raises and promotions; perhaps due to team-based collaboration and credit given on a group level rather than an individual level.

Advice to Senior ManagementInclude team in more initiatives and thoughts/ideas outside of the immediate group with the possibility of collaborating and engaging other teams in an Operations-wide communciation or initiative of some sort.

Excellent place to work

FX Strategist (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at Goldman Sachs

ProsExtremely team-oriented culture. Lots of emphasis on career development. Very helpful 360-degree review system. Excellent opportunities for internal mobility. Compensation generally higher than other BB firms.

ConsExpect to learn a great deal of information/skills in a limited time. As long as you show a hunger for learning and a commitment to going beyond the standard expectations of the position, colleagues will readily help you.

Advice to Senior ManagementSwitch to a bi-yearly review system, to provide a continuing source of formal feedback, and to better manage expectations with regards to compensation.

A great place to work

Technology Analyst (Current Employee)
Jersey City, NJ

I have been working at Goldman Sachs

ProsVery smart, hard-working, driven people. You can learn a lot by watching what makes others successful. The name carries with you wherever you go. During good economic climates end-of-year bonuses are a welcome reward for all the extra hours put in throughout the year. Goldman also takes diversity very seriously and is quite pro-active in ensuring that the workplace is one in which everyone feels comfortable and has the ability to advance. The firm also has an excellent Community Service initiative which requires employees to spend one serving the community in some way.

ConsWe work a lot of hours. Depending on your exact position it may not be as bad or it could be worse, but generally speaking GS people work a lot.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the good work

Very Competitive Environment - 24/7

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Salt Lake City, UT

I have been working at Goldman Sachs

ProsLong-term employees have the opportunity to earn much larger salaries than at other companies.
Intellectually satisfying work at the industry leader. There are many opportunities to get great career-bosting experience by raising your hand for projects.

ConsMost people put in long hours; there is pressure to be "on" 24/7 to colleagues in Europe and Asia as well as in the US. The environment, while team-based, is always competitive. Not everyone is a good fit in that atmosphere.

Advice to Senior ManagementGoldman is a very successful firm; management is very smart.
