I worked at Goldman Sachs as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

I was an intern last summer. I would've stayed full time if I didn't have more college to do. Management was minimal and very helpful when I had to deal with them. I just had my project, a deadline, access to lots of useful internal libraries, and senior engineers who were very happy to help and answer questions.

I realize that there would be more pressure working full time, but that's less about deadlines and more about migrating servers and fixing errors.

    Cons

Over the past couple decades, a lot of "corporate" and "enterprise" stuff got adopted or paid for. Everyone is stuck with Windows, and sometimes it feels like the entire enterprise design patterns book was thrown at the codebase. Of course, I use Windows at home and the seemingly obfuscating design patterns do make it a bit easier to modify the ancient codebase.

Also, if you're used to Bay area companies, you'll be disappointed to know that the company doesn't pay for your food.

    Pros

One can make a very good career at GS
The policies and educational benefits are very beneficial

    Cons

Some of the lower management staff are micro managers
If you know how things are done, you are hindered by micro management

    Advice to Management

Senior management should promote managers that can properly interact with sunbonnets to help them make the proper choices to further their careers and to better serve their current position in a meaningful and efficient manner.

    Pros

Probably the best big financial sector company to work for in as software engineer/developer. Strong interest in each employee job satisfaction and support for career development. Interest in using new technologies and programming concepts. Allows (to a degree) more flexible model for software development.

    Cons

While one of the better big financial companies, still a place with a very corporate, conservative, and bureaucratic style for software development. The strong divide b/w management and engineering often leads to misguided decisions and feeling of wasted effort. Lack of interest to invest in R&D.

    Advice to Management

Invest in R&D. Grow a culture of ownership instead of complex departmental silos of responsibilities. Allow employees to understand and recognize the impact of their work.

    Pros

Brand name, opportunity for steadily increasing salary if you are excelling at your job.

    Cons

work-life balance is poor, hours on the higher end, politics within the company play a large factor in promotions

    Advice to Management

turnover is far too high. it's not something you should just accept. Empower your employees and give them interesting projects to work on. Too much repetition is sure to result in your best young employees leaving to go elsewhere.

    Pros

Compensation, enjoyable work, cool people and freedom to choose what you want to do within reasons of course. Access to people at all levels of management without a lot of red tapes. Generous vacation package and 401K matching.

    Cons

Long hours, lack of work-life balance. The expectations are way above anyone else in the similar industry and almost unrealistic at a time. Forcing employees to move to an office location that is not part of employee's current demographics and hence force them to resign or get laid off.

    Advice to Management

You do not need to waste real estate for technology folks. Implement a good remote work assignments and make desks shared so employees can have work-life balance and be more productive.

    Pros

GS hires some very smart people. The competence in terms of technology is actually quite amazing. There is a lot of emphasis on consensus and working together as a team. I had heard a number of people complain about the hours and the constant pressure etc., but I have not personally seen it. There are the occasional delivery pressures, but it is not constant. Work-life balance is quite ok. The company offers a lot in terms of benefits for its employees. There is also ample room for growth for the right people.

    Cons

Most of the cons are the usual ones in working for a large company. Technology processes are heavy in bureaucracy - to some extent this is understandable, but this impacts productivity. The number of meetings that one has to attend sometimes tends to take focus away from the job. It is very difficult to get something done unless you are in the top echelons of the management - even though there is a lot of emphasis on people being driven and motivated. Developers are required to do development, QA, and production support. This does not make for very productive developers.

    Advice to Management

Reduce some of the technology bureaucracy overhead. Hire people to do QA and production support and pay attention to the quality of software we put out to users.
