I worked at Goldman Sachs full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

working with leading edge clients and working with highly motivated co-workers. Emphasis on using technology for system enhancements and improvements.

    Cons

forget about highly touted work/life balance. Must be willing and eager to find ways to make improvements and demonstrate the highest regard for the all giving process. Find ways to stand out in a very competitive culture.

I worked at Goldman Sachs full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Compensation, enjoyable work, cool people and freedom to choose what you want to do within reasons of course. Access to people at all levels of management without a lot of red tapes. Generous vacation package and 401K matching.

    Cons

Long hours, lack of work-life balance. The expectations are way above anyone else in the similar industry and almost unrealistic at a time. Forcing employees to move to an office location that is not part of employee's current demographics and hence force them to resign or get laid off.

    Advice to Management

You do not need to waste real estate for technology folks. Implement a good remote work assignments and make desks shared so employees can have work-life balance and be more productive.

I have been working at Goldman Sachs full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

GS hires some very smart people. The competence in terms of technology is actually quite amazing. There is a lot of emphasis on consensus and working together as a team. I had heard a number of people complain about the hours and the constant pressure etc., but I have not personally seen it. There are the occasional delivery pressures, but it is not constant. Work-life balance is quite ok. The company offers a lot in terms of benefits for its employees. There is also ample room for growth for the right people.

    Cons

Most of the cons are the usual ones in working for a large company. Technology processes are heavy in bureaucracy - to some extent this is understandable, but this impacts productivity. The number of meetings that one has to attend sometimes tends to take focus away from the job. It is very difficult to get something done unless you are in the top echelons of the management - even though there is a lot of emphasis on people being driven and motivated. Developers are required to do development, QA, and production support. This does not make for very productive developers.

    Advice to Management

Reduce some of the technology bureaucracy overhead. Hire people to do QA and production support and pay attention to the quality of software we put out to users.

I have been working at Goldman Sachs full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

If your desire is to constantly challenge yourself and grow you skill sets, this is the place to be. Surrounded by many intellectuals who consistently challenge the status quo in a collaborative atmosphere will equip you with the management tools you’ll need to excel in a corporate environment.

    Cons

Work-life balance can be a challenge in particular areas of firm as well as mobility within the firm. Both are championed by senior management and possible, but difficult to navigate and ultimately accomplish.

    Advice to Management

Have HCM deliver clear and concise information regarding the expectations and responsibilities of new analysts. Many become disengaged and frustrated, due to perceived misplacement and lack of direction from managers (i.e. timely feedback).

  10. Great pay/benefits for Intern - however typically assigned menial tasks and limited exposure/room for growth

I have been working at Goldman Sachs as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Nice/clean/eco-friendly building - Driven Associates/Vice Presidents - Good pay/benefits (optional) for college student

    Cons

    - In Jersey City - Limited growth opportunity for interns not through the IBD program - Little responsibility/engagement for interns

    Advice to Management

I would suggest engaging the interns more and giving them more responsibility as time goes on (in addition to the regular administrative tasks). Having worked here for almost a year now and still doing relatively the same thing I learned when I first came aboard is a little disappointing. I was hoping for more challenging tasks and greater exposure to the processes relating to my field of study.

    Pros

great to work with talented, competitive, collaborative people.

    Cons

lately at senior level it has become less of meritocracy based and more of whom you know and how you project yourself rather than actual value added.

    Advice to Management

partners and managing directors should re-instate skip-level and skip-skip level contacts to get more ground level reality.
