    Cons

politics. at least my manager is terrible - doesn't give you career advice, treats you as a working machine

    I worked at Goldman Sachs

    Pros

Great support network. As an intern, you have the same responsabilities as your teammates. Also, there are numerous networking events that are fun and informative.

    Cons

Extremely long hours. The work and life balance is extremely difficult to balance, even working in Salt Lake City. However, you become very close with your coworkers so we would celebrate Fridays after work.

    I worked at Goldman Sachs

    Pros

    - Compensation
    - Responsibility given to each employee
    - Great training
    - Perks (free dinner after 8 PM, free car after 10 PM)
    - Prestige of having the firm on your resume

    Cons

    - The hours - even in the Operations division (where I interned), there is virtually no work/life balance
    - Too much time is spent focused on tiny details that don't matter very much or at all
    - Too much time spent in meetings which have nothing to do with your job
    - HCM doesn't do things when they promise they will
    - As is the case with any job, some managers (like the one I had) can be quite difficult to deal with

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote a better work/life balance and revamp some aspects of the firm's culture. Also, provide better training to managers so they can be more effective.

    I worked at Goldman Sachs

    Pros

Goldman Sachs is a recognizable and reputable firm, so it looks great on a resume.
Exposed to upper management through company wide meetings.

    Cons

60 hour weeks, no one takes lunch breaks, and for overtime you get paid 1/2 time.
The work itself is boring and mundane. I felt like a robot.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better work life balance- practice what you preach
Be straight up with your employees. I couldn't stand the sugar coating.

    I worked at Goldman Sachs

    Pros

    Steep learning curve
    Work hard, play hard
Let me work on models to round out my summer experience
Team always available to answer questions

    Cons

    Long hours
HR was difficult when I tried to move internally
    Firm is currently cutting expenses
Very volatile in terms of headcount

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

GS is looking at its investment management division as its future revenue leader. It should instead retain its focus on investment banking advisory and sales & trading.

Former Employee - Vice President - Technology in Jersey City, NJ

    I worked at Goldman Sachs

    Pros

Very collaborative work culture. Tremendous focus on career growth - in fact improving yourself is not something they help you with - it is something you are _required_ to do otherwise you will be in the "bottom" for consideration when every year 5% of the worst performers are let go.
Work from home is supported where it makes sense.

    Cons

Technology hours are not as bad as banking hours, but still on average 10 to 12 hours a day (plus some other emergency every few days)
The company used to be flatter 10 years ago, now there is more middle management.

    I worked at Goldman Sachs

    Pros

Brilliant people, top prestige, lean teams, great exposure to management and clients

    Cons

Long hours, office politics, stuffy culture, unnecessarily competitive, male-dominated, fake and judgmental people. Disproportionate importance of perceived personality, and not actually a meritocracy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Don't micromanage, give better feedback
