I have been working at Goldman Sachs full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Some of the smartest people work at Goldman Sachs. For an intern/graduate it is a good place to learn and start building a career. Depending on the team you could be working with cutting-edge technology. If working in front office teams you will have plenty of exposure to the business side of things.

    Cons

As with many large organisations, the experience of working at Goldman Sachs is greatly dependent on which team you end up working for, since the style, culture, and compensation varies wildly between teams. In terms of compensation, the business-aligned divisions will be a lot of better off.

In technology, it is extremely painful to get any change approved, due to the many layers of management and bureaucracy. Also, the software development practices used in certain front office teams are truly shocking - hardly any unit testing, no collaboration. The code for some of the most critical trading functions seems to be randomly cobbled together until it finally works in production.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please treat your employees as more than just a "resource". The retaining power of the golden handcuff is no longer as strong as it used to be. Communicate more and learn how to motivate people.

I have been working at Goldman Sachs full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I believe that the environment and culture is suited to my personality. I find that that the ecosystem encourages teamwork, meritocracy and autonomy to a great extent.

    Cons

Work life balance does not exist. Expats and locals should have a comparable pay scale when working in "3rd World" nations

I worked at Goldman Sachs full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Teammates are intelligent and committed to actually solving problems, not just punching in and punching out against the clock. Everybody is intelligent and driven to contribute and achieve - very positive vibe. Consensus culture. Generous salary. London office is particularly flexible about leaving office at a reasonable hour and working from home to attend to personal issues as necessary.

    Cons

London team sometimes needs to assert its independence and stature from the New York team which tends to be domineering. You may leave the office at a reasonable hour, but your work comes home with you. Intense firefighting mode can be very exhausting and create the illusion of work without progressing.

Actually, all of the above is pre-collapse. I left just as things were turning sour so I have no idea how the culture has changed in recent years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cross-functional collaboration is essential to getting perspective on the overall firm. It's very tempting to keep IT in a silo remote from its Ops user base, but this exposure is a mistake. One of the best decisions make is to have one team member sitting amidst Ops each day. Got a pulse of how things really operated, users felt reassured, and baked-in a culture of having a virtual office where a teammate can work remotely and yet contribute meaningfully.

    Pros

GS is a full- service, global investment bank that offers client service across the firm. So it offers you the best opportunities globally in financial services.

    Cons

High levels of pressure and sometimes too much work.
