Amazing place to grow a people management career

    Sales Manager (Current Employee)
    Mountain View, CA

ProsGoogle wants to create and hire the worlds best people managers, and to that end they have more leadership & management trainings, courses, frameworks, and resources than most business schools. And then there are the legendary benefits. Free food, possibly the best health insurance in the country, a great campus completely with gyms, pools, tons of green space, etc. It's a pleasure to be at work.

ConsBecause it's a big company, you have to retain your own "Start-up" drive and motivation. You could just drift along if you aren't proactive. But if you are proactive, wow can you get things done and go places. It just takes a little internal motivation.

Advice to Senior ManagementPromote even more from within at the most senior levels.

    BOLD Intern

    BOLD Intern (Current Employee)
    Mountain View, CA

ProsGreat benefits, incredible culture, hard-working peers, and great opportunities to grow professionally. The environment promotes teamwork and support rather than competition and sabotage which is great.

ConsGoogle is not immune to office politics. Many people are invested in their own responsibilities and projects that it becomes difficult to ensure that you are receiving the necessary and training for your own job. Also, mobility is more common horizontally rather than vertically.

Making an impact on the world.

    Software Engineer (Current Employee)
    Mountain View, CA

ProsThe Mission statement. The Leadership (Larry has done a really good job IMHO of focusing the company). The People, really smart, really nice, usually, there are a couple of bad apples, no system is perfect.

ConsAs the company has gotten larger (been there since 2007) politics has become more prevalent, especially over "control of binaries". Why build on shared platforms when you can't control it (I think it is silly). As you move up the ranks, work life balance gets really screwy as you tend to work with offices all around the world (at least in my case).

    Great place for an internship

    Software Engineer Intern (Former Employee)
    Mountain View, CA

ProsReally, really smart people. Great pay. Great perks. Great culture. You can really tell that almost everyone there thinks they are doing what is best for the world. They aren't just there to make a quick buck.

ConsIt seems like there are a lot of people who are over-qualified for what they're doing. This isn't really an issue for an intern but it could be down the road. As an intern, it can be stressful trying to get your project done in such a short amount of time. No one puts pressure on you but if you want to get a full time offer, you probably want to try to impress them. Also, since they're obsessed with (un-biased) data, they insist on having interns do more interviews at the end of their internship if they want to convert to full time. If you happen to have a bad day or get an interviewer you really don't click with, you're basically screwed, no matter how good your reviews from your manager and co-workers are. After this, they are VERY strict about you not re-applying for a least a year, by which point anyone would have already found another job.

If you want to work at a big company, this is the one to work at

    Design Manager (Former Employee)
    Mountain View, CA

ProsGreat benefits and perks. Lots of challenging problems to solve. Unlimited resources (if you're working on the right things). Most important of all, an incredible mission.

ConsLots of underperforming long time employees and managers aren't courageous enough to fire them.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more active in rewarding performance rather than tenure.

    A stimulating summer experience

    Software Engineer Intern (Former Employee)
    Mountain View, CA

ProsEveryone's very bright and hardworking, but everyone knows this already. More important, the Google culture is one of openness. Many docs are publicly visible, so you can learn about other projects in the company, and people enjoy talking about what they're working on.

ConsThis varies significantly by location, but some workspaces are very tightly crammed, with people sitting side-by-side in long tables. This is a distracting and unpleasant work environment. It's like being in an industrial chicken coop. Engineers need quiet!

Great perks to retain overqualified staff usually doing trivial work

    Program Manager (Current Employee)
    Mountain View, CA

ProsGoogle perks are best in the industry and Founders and Sr. Management have done well to invest in attracting and retaining talent. The work place is really enjoyable and there is always excitement in the air about new technology.

ConsFar too many overqualified people doing trivial work. Here even minions have minions of their own on contract to do even smallest of tasks.

Advice to Senior ManagementHiring practices are strange and often give too much power to one individual to influence the decision. This policy would work great if everyone you have hired is already perfect. But there are some bad apples, and they are setting up barriers for smarter people to get in and work.
