Pros
Great family atmosphere, good management, solid company. Company did well despite the recession, not all the layoffs like so many companies had. There is a lot of tenure among both staff and drivers in the fleet. Company is growing which is nice.
Cons
Long hours, very busy and can be a stressful business. There was a pay freeze which I understand but would like to see more pay.
Advice to Senior Management
Spend more time with the people. Keep letting us know what is going on and what we can do to improve. Would like to have more regular reviews.
Pros
not realy alot at this time, good relationship with planners, home time is respected, thats about the only perks left
Cons
long days, seams to be switching over to short haul, lot of load switching ,when you do get a long one they take you off it to do something that was forgotten about or late, our on time pick up and delv.% is going down fast, under staffed,if you need know anything about a customer plan on hours before some one gets back to you even if its just a phone number, customers are starting to treat us just like all the other big carriers because of all the missed pick up and delvs.have more drivers quiting than they can hire but still keep triing to get bigger
Advice to Senior Management
when you turned trucks down did you think you would keep up with what we were doing buying all those new trucks didnt even get us back to even, regroup, step back and get cought up,focus on our big good customers before we loose all of them
Pros
Terminal is close to my home, and when you start you generally will run west but after that good guess where you will go. Insurance is one of the better ones available
Cons
The #1 problem,is the slow moving truck, poorly maintained, they are the belief that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" and if it is broke, and only your creature comfort, forget it!. Good thing they have prepass because you probably will not pass DOT inspections, with the tires on your tractor or the junk trailers you end up pulling quite often. They have a slew of brand new ones, no telling where they happen to be, I haven't seen one in quite a while. There is NO raises, No safety bonus, No fuel mileage bonus. You have to keep on them about your home time, because it is the only benefit you have. They will run you to death, surprised when you claim to be sick, and still want you to keep running, Personal or family life, forget it, you have none
Advice to Senior Management
Remember we make your paycheck, Yes, we need what you do, but you need us even more, you only know how to "Drive Your Desk"
Pros
Most employees who had worked for other trucking companies preferred GTI over major trucking companies, ie: Interstate, Hunt, Swift. Can be a good company to work for if you are male, played sports in college and still love to talk about and/or play sports, and are willing to do whatever you are told without thought. Opportunities to work different shifts and within different departments. Most of the employees are friendly and fun to work with. Even most of the managers who are difficult to deal with business-wise are friendly on a personal level. Growing company so there is a chance of doing something new within the company.
Cons
If you are not the person described above, your career with GTI will be hindered. They have moved away from being a "family" company. Your respect for the job will differ depending on the manager you work for. Some care about their employees, while others do not. However, sometimes the ones that care are limited on what they can do due to the VP's or Gordons holding them back. There are good employees who can not get paid what they are worth, because they started too low and management will not allow a large enough raise. Some supervisors are even making less than their employees or very close to. Gossip spreads like wildfire. Good ole boys club still running the show. Turnover is increasing. The VP of Marketing, a VP of Operations, and the sole legal counsel have left since mid 2009. Mid-level managers who have left in the last couple years have included a Director of Logistics, Director of Marketing, Director of Recruiting, Director of Sales- SoCal, Director of Sales-NorCal, Director of Sales-Midwest and several managers within the Operations and Safety departments. There are way too many entry level managers and other employees to mention. All of this in a downturned economy where people are willing to leave a company who is staying afloat. Reviews are inconsistent, I have seen some employees go 3 years without one...not talking about raises only, but no review given. Even though the company is profiting in this poor market, they still have a wage freeze for the last 1.5 years, increased the work week to a full 50 hours, and expect the employees to suck up the workload of the 30 employees let go during the reduction in force and others who have left along the way. If you are hourly, expect to be scrutinized on your lunches, breaks, arrival times, and no overtime allowed unless they have a special project for you. If you are salary, expect to lose time with your family. If you are in management, expect to not have a family or social life if you want to succeed with GTI. One of the other reviews posted stated the amount of females in upper management. Those that are still there are either part of the Gordon family or were previously married to or currently married to other male managers who have been with GTI for 10+ years. The new in house legal counsel is female, as was the previous, but that is not a true management position.
Advice to Senior Management
The Gordons need to step back and take a look at why their employees are so unhappy even though business is doing well. When employees at all levels are leaving, it says something about what you are doing. Maybe think about selling the company jet, fly coach, and offer salary increases to those who have stuck it out with you, or keep the jet and still give raises. Start doing anonymous reviews of management (only some managers do this currently) and also do exit interviews 100% of the time. Even offer a bonus on final check for those willing to complete one, because it will be the most truthful feedback you will get. Do this with the drivers as well. Maybe even do mailings to previous employees who managers did not complete an exit interview with.
Pros
Being a trucking company there are alot of different shifts you can work. There are a lot of good people working here that care about doing a good job.
Cons
Below average pay. No raises, even for top performers that last few years. This is a 365, 24/7 operation so you will be working nights, weekends and holidays. Not alot of opportunity to move up, just move around.
Advice to Senior Management
Look at ways to keep employees happy. Pay, raises, schedule. Turnover is on the rise at GTI and it is going to get worse when the job market picks up agian.
Pros
miles, home time, there is not twenty good words to describe the pros to working for gordon trucking anymore was great when i started
Cons
turned trucks down, expected to do same work in same time frame as before, have to leave home a day earlier for on time delv. to west coast, froze wages been at same rate for 3 years, almost impossible to get det.pay even with proper protacol as stated by them, never have enough trailers always running to find mts, paid miles are always less than their routed miles
Advice to Senior Management
start treating drivers with respect like it used to be,give us an incentive to stay at gordon, messages about safety are getting old give the people that are safe a raise
Pros
GTI, Gordon Trucking, Inc., has a great group of customers, providing year round employment for drivers. Every company has fluctuations, Gordon is well positioned, even in slower seasons and bad economic times. Their pay is competitive. Their benefits are competitive. They try to help with my needs for time off, though this can vary with individual dispatchers.
Cons
Like most employers these days, Gordon is trying to cut costs to survive and thrive in this tough business environment. So wage suppression is an issue. Veteran drivers are feeling this heat from the company, feeling like they have a target on their back. If the leave GTI, where would they find the same pay level elsewhere? So those drivers are fearful. New drivers are coming in several pennies below what it was just two years ago.
On top of that, the company is cooperating fully with CSA2010, so we are feelling that pressure too. Drivers are worried about losing their jobs for reasons that didn't used to be an issue.
Company drivers have to pay for our own truck washes. I wouldn't mind if my name was on the truck, but it isn't, so Gordon should pay for this.
Advice to Senior Management
Your drivers don't feel "ownership" at GTI. At one time, there was a feeling of "family" in the company. That is long gone. Drivers don't feel they have input on important moves within the company.
Worse, we feel "bossed" by our dispatchers, who bully us by lying, condescending, manipulating behaviors.
It is the drivers who are the face of GTI in serving the customer, it is really the driver who brings money into the company. So why are we treated as second class employees.
I wish I could feel proud to work here, but some days I feel very discouraged about the leadership by Steve Gordon.
Pros
Running area, good equipment, some of the planners and dispatcher
Cons
some of the planners and dispatchers. Getting home (like ever other trucking company)
Advice to Senior Management
A system that shows the planners & dispatchers where the drivers prefer to operate. Switch to Blue Cross-Blue Shield for medical for a better selection of "prefer providers" back East
Pros
Female co-owner, VP of National Accounts, General Counsel, Occupational Health, Director of Logistics, Accounting Manager and Assistant Treasurer, unusual for the industry.
Cons
Challenging industry, very fast paced. Not for people with low stress tolerance stress or unwillingness to spend time in operations.
Advice to Senior Management
Spend more time with people.
Pros
Plenty of work. Can't think of anything else.
Cons
Total disregard for drivers health, humanity, and safety. Was told by driver manager out right he/she did not care at all what the driver needed or wanted. I have been threatened to be blamed for delivery failure for jobs I had not even accepted. Interupted while sleeping after putting in a full driving day. They straight up treat you like dirt. They do not care and no one to talk to about poor treatment.
Advice to Senior Management
Get involved with your drivers. Treat them with respect and you'll get respect.
