    I have been working at Government of Alberta as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

    Friendly Staff, never felt like I was rushed to get everything done. Very little stress. Good hours and an excellent job for any student looking to get some experience making enterprise software. Management is very reasonable with time off for appointments or just wanting to take days off. They are more than willing to let you shuffle hours around if necessary.

    Cons

    Sometimes things can slow down waiting for meetings with end users. Project may start and end depending on what the Minister may think.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    compensation was ok, though there are other internships that might have paid slightly better this was still ok.

    Pros

    Regular raises, enjoyed the people I worked with very much.

    Cons

    always felt under an axe, room for movement was limited, heavy oversight on lower levels of work force, constant outsource threat. Compensation is lower than private industry. little ability or encouragement to work from home.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Oursourcing was and still is a huge mistake.

    Pros

    Excellent internal training opportunities, solid benefits

    Cons

    A shocking level of disorganization. It took a full month after leaving before I received my vacation pay (Employment Standards are 3 days) because no one remembered to submit the paperwork.

    General work culture was very negative: morale is very low and the workplace in general was very unhappy.

    I worked at Government of Alberta as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

    Friendly atmosphere.Coffee time every week.Explore the horizon .Meet different kind of people.Good internship to start your career,as they are not that straight on the policy,as long as you finish the task.

    Cons

    Too chill in the beginning of the internship.And it is mostly reading related job,instead of engineering job.And should have arrageed more field trip to learn the actual process.

    Should have a more detailed task list for the coop student in the beginning.

    Opportunity as jobs are plentiful. Compensation compared to other provinces is very good.

    Section managers were always grateful and showed appreciation
    The earned day off was a great perk
    A great office atmosphere with lots of fun activities to break up the workload

    Cons

    Contract end dates for work can be forgotten by upper management leaving you wondering if your position is being extended or not.

    Pros

    Most people one works with are caring and want to share knowledge with each other. Employees I have worked with interact with the public in a professional manner.

    Cons

    Some people I have worked with do not seem to want to share knowledge. It is sad that some people seem to harbour the attitude "I learnt what I learnt over 2 years. I'll be darned to share my knowldge with you for free."

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Management need to find ways to encourage knowledge sharing amongt all employees. This also means that they need to be honest with their employees also!

    Pros

    Job security, ability to change positions and geographic locations, benefits, pension plan, union. In the corporate centers many life and career education courses are offered.

    Cons

    Run too much like a for profit corporation. Sometimes in the outer rim of the empire nepotism runs rampant to the detriment of the organisation.

    Get rid of bonus structure for saving money, safety is always the first to suffer.
