    Pros

I worked in the Communications Branch with a great group of comms professionals. It was one of the better work environments I've experienced. Plus, the Government of Ontario actively encourages you to develop professionally, even allowing secondments to other positions to gain new experience. Salary was decent and benefits were good; pension is among the best available.

    Cons

Most ministry offices are near Queen's Park in the middle of Toronto. Costs a commutable distance from there are high and raising a family on the salary I had was tough in the face of remarkable housing costs. Toronto is just too expensive for a middle-class salary if you didn't already get in early on the housing market (I, unfortunately, didn't!)

    Advice to Management

Others who worked in government told me the relatively nimble nature of the Ministry and my team were not necessarily common to other Ministries. Too bad -- my time there ranks among my happiest professionally.

    Pros

I learned a great deal during my time there. Overall, it was a great experience and a great place to work

    Cons

No complaints. I enjoyed the people I worked with.

    Advice to Management

I have no advice to management. I thought they were great. They were decision makers that were open to suggestions.

    Pros

If you want your benefits cut 60% and wage frozen for 4 years, then wotk for the Government of Ontario.

    Advice to Management

    None. They are leaving.

    Pros

Good pension plan, comparable benefits, work-life balance.

    Cons

Slow changing organization, lip-service to innovation, extreme dependence on consultants.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to internal talent management and promote fair hiring practices. Do not attempt to run government as another business. Public service does not have profit (or cost recovery) motive and going down that route would lead to unintended consequences that most likely-among other things- hurt public trust.

    Pros

Great team work. Very friendly staff. The summer position is a great way to gain experience while studying.

    Cons

The pay is not very rewarding. Lots of office work depending on where you work. I would rather be learning something new than photocopy all day.

    Pros

Good benefits, freedom to come and go as you wanted.

    Cons

Incompetent management that was more concerned with protecting their own jobs than actually doing anything progressive.

    Advice to Management

Senior management needs to be less concerned with --- on the rung above.

    Pros

A summer job in the government is not as stressful compared to a job in the private sector.

    Cons

Because it is not as stressful, things get done a lot slower.
