I have been working at Governors State University full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Colleagues in my division are very supportive, and the diversity of the student body has been enjoyable. I attend meetings regularly, provide service up to the university level and apply for internal research funds. The inclusion of freshmen has also brought a positive revolution to our cultural and physical environment. Full timers teach 10 classes during a 12 month contract, but often you have two sections of the same class.

    Cons

The salary is low for my position, and the budget constraints (i.e. travel for conferences) is a huge challenge. Also the opportunities to move to the tenure track have been slow in coming. We often have classes at 7:30 pm which is very challenging for students and faculty.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We work in a food dessert. The cafeteria is ridiculously expensive for the poor quality.

I worked at Governors State University part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

People are working really hard to expand the school, specially when it comes to science-related fields, like chemistry, biology and physics. New labs, new equipment. They are definitely investing. So, if the idea is grow along with it it might a good opportunity to start.

    Cons

Students have a very poor background, specially in math. Some of then have problems with high school level math. Most of them work during the day and go to school in the evening. Their idea is basically pass all courses - preferably with "A's" - and leave to find a decent job. Almost no effort to learn more and become good professionals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do better much to attract better students.
