I have been working at Gowan Company full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Gowan is a human company, if that makes sense, and the owners care about the people who work there. A great deal more flexibility and accommodation is granted than at your average large company. Gowan has never had a broad force reduction in its history, and has paid a bonus every year except for one. All employees who completed a full year, from janitor to general manager, get the same percentage of their salary as a bonus, as long as the quality of their work makes them eligible for one.

    Cons

There are a few inept managers working for Gowan, who are a bit teflon. There's also an element of family favorites getting special treatment. Gowan is a very flat organization, with few levels of management, so it's definitely not a place where you get promoted every 6 months.

    Advice to Management

For the most part, the small company feel and sensibilities are worth maintaining, even as the company grows rapidly. Limit the perceived favoritism for friends of family members.

I have been working at Gowan Company (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Very casual atmosphere Freedom to fail Nice 401K limited match

    Cons

Extreme cronyism in hiring practices and promotions Chaotic environment, lack of direction or clear mission. Non-competitive salary below average benefit package Information hoarding leadership High turnover rate in most departments Nice training ground for "high potential" employees but can't retain them. Understaffed with skilled competent employees

    Advice to Management

Management is a major part of the problem. Hire managers with people skills and let them manage people. Don't assign them 5 additional jobs and attempt to manage people on the side.

    Pros

Overtime (forced). Pay rate. Benefits. Flexible schedule IF you say you have kids or your friends with or related to Boss

    Cons

Lab: Blatant Nepotism, Cronyism existed. Preferential treatment given to family, friends of Boss. Unorganized department. No structured training or health/safety monitoring. Continuous HIGH turn overs created understaffing, insane amounts of forced OT, techs had to train new employees while dealing with unreasonable production demands and pressures, not taking lunch and breaks (16+ hour shifts), jeopardized personal health and safety because of rushing to get backlogged duties, toxic relationship among employees. Could not communicate concerns for fear of retaliation and indifference from Boss.

    Advice to Management

HR: Get CONFIDENTIAL feedback from each Lab Tech with written promise of no retaliation. Act upon concerns.

I have been working at Gowan Company full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Mid-sized, family owned company means less bureaucracy. Projects can move in a timely manner. Company is growing and in a strong industry.

    Cons

Family owned company means less advancement opportunity. Friends of the family given preferential treatment. Cronyism abounds. Bonus structure does not motivate individuals to accomplish tasks. No accountability on an individual level.

    Advice to Management

As you grow to be a large global company, hire skilled, experienced employees and pay them well.

    Pros

Excellent family-oriented company. Great for parents. Flexible with hours / work schedule. Encourages socialization among employees with company luncheons and happy hours. A great company to work for if you have the right personality and attitude, but it's definitely not for everyone. Amazing bonus opportunity (but not always guaranteed) and good benefits program.

    Cons

Highly competitive and the same people get recognized over and over again. Takes a long time (years) before you are fully accepted into the "tribe" of Gowan, but once you're in you're golden. Salaries are not always the greatest, typically much lower than industry average. Raises are very, very small and far between. Negotiate well before agreeing to accepting an offer. Very cliquey social groups.

    Advice to Management

Greater appreciation for ALL employees, not just your 'darlings' or 'stars' of the company. Every position is vital for survival, treat them like they are (at least try.) Better salaries. Otherwise, good job.
