    Pros

They ramp up capital pretty quickly. The people are genuinely friendly. The cafeteria is not bad either. The building is beautiful.

    Cons

Tight and changing risk limits. Hard to know what targets to keep. People were hired and fired pretty quickly. It's a revolving door. Also, the one year non-compete is pretty onerous.

If You Like Wearing Jeans, Forget to Shave, and Know Nothing About Finance Then Graham is Great Fit!

I worked at Graham Capital Management full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Graham hires people for their "fit" into their corporate culture. If you like wearing jeans to work, then Graham might hire you! If you forget to shave or prefer a beard, then Graham will hire you. If you know nothing about finance but possess a can-do attitude and a desire to learn, then you will find yourself right at home among the Graham employees.

    Cons

Graham hires people who have no industry experience or left investment banks because of regulatory changes or other similar reasons. Numerous have turned down their offers and Graham is left with opinionated management with mediocre to poor results compared to institutional hedge fund reports.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Graham Capital Management full-time

    Pros

Nice building/gym, stable job and great company if you have no career goals, better than investment bank in work/life balance. Wonderful place to wait for retirement.

    Cons

Zero communication from the top, many many management layers for just dozens of people, highest ratio in my career. If you are not part of small circle, you are pretty much done, no career growth. Better to stay mediocre and do minimum, the end result will be the same anyway, people sit in the office have much easier life and better pay no matter what they do or deliver.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overhaul management teams, reward people based on performance/contribution not based on how long they are employed by the firm, retain one top performer is better than keep 5 mediocre ones. Monitor time card and lunch hours won't help, hire/keep/reward top performer and get out of their way and let them do their things.

    Pros

Job security across the firm, except for Portfolio Managers

    Cons

Apathetic leadership in Technology. No vision. The development team has 35 people with 18 among them with management roles. That is a ratio of 1:1 of managers vs productive workers. The culture encourages Yes men. the leadership in development team lacks business knowledge and makes decisions that are self preserving with no consideration for clients and stake holders.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring in professional and experienced management in the development team in technology. the current team is inept.

    Pros

Hire Inexperienced People; Great for People without Wall Street Experience

    Cons

Lost $60 million in hedge fund 2012; Poor compensation compared to Wall Street; Employees lack experience in electronic market making

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Graham is Located Like a CAGE - Containment Area for Graham Employees which isolated from NYC or any train station; Hire Experienced Employees; Pay Well; Move from Rowayton to a Location Near NYC or the Train;

    Pros

Management very easy to work with. Facilities and support were great.

    Cons

Although the message from management was to focus on long term results, in practice there was an implied pressure for short-term steady results

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Once you've identified top-level talent, ensure you do everything possible to retain them, through both good and bad investment cycles.

I worked at Graham Capital Management full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    1. Good compensation
    2. Most people are good to work with
    3. Nice office space
    4. Low-stress/ not overworked

    Cons

    1. Very poor communication between groups.
    2. Close-minded management which is not receptive to the ideas of others and who micromanage things in a very top-down fashion.
    3. Very few interesting or challenging assignments for a software engineer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a second look at some of the people placed into management roles and have them change how they operate or replace them.
